The New York Racing Association announced major purse increases for overnight races at Saratoga Race Course, where purse levels will be raised by nearly 14 percent blended across all categories during the Belmont Stakes Racing Festival and throughout the summer meet.

The headline move: open maiden special weights climbed a full 15 percent, from $100,000 to $115,000, with first-level allowance events set at $120,000 and second-level allowance races at $125,000. Those three numbers represent the sharpest upgrade to Saratoga's overnight conditions menu in recent memory, and they arrive at a moment when competition for quality horses is as fierce as ever among the country's major summer circuits.

To further drive participation, NYRA raised purses for the maiden allowance auction category to $90,000, a 12.5 percent increase. Launched in 2019, maiden allowance auction races are restricted to horses that either sold or RNA'd for $65,000 or less at their most recent public auction. The category has become one of the most productive pipelines to graded company at the Spa. Last summer, Napoleon Solo, a $40,000 Keeneland September Yearling Sale purchase, graduated in a Spa maiden auction allowance en route to a win in the Grade 1 Champagne at Belmont. Trainer Chad Summers and owner Gold Square turned a modest $40,000 investment into a Grade 1 trophy; the auction allowance format made the path possible.

NYRA's commitment to the state-bred program is reflected in significant purse increases for races restricted to New York-breds. These new purse levels take effect beginning with the Belmont Stakes Racing Festival and continue through the summer meet, with maiden special weights run for $100,000, first-level allowance races for $105,000 and second-level allowance races for $110,000. New York-bred two-year-old maiden special weight races will be run for $115,000.

The New York-bred increases are the latest step in a longer-term policy shift. NYRA previously announced that beginning January 1, 2026, all New York-bred overnight races for two-year-olds on the NYRA circuit would match their open-company counterparts in purse money, and a separate expansion set effective January 2027 will extend that parity across all New York-bred overnight races circuit-wide. NYRA ran 548 New York-bred races for total purses of $42,817,000, with the broader program anticipated to increase New York-bred overnight purses by 15 percent compared to 2024 levels.

To reinforce the residency component, NYRA and the New York State Thoroughbred Breeding and Development Fund provide up to $650,000 per year in purse bonuses to owners, offering $5,000 every time a New York-sired New York-bred wins at the maiden special weight or allowance level at NYRA's tracks.

"NYRA is committed to supporting and enhancing the New York-bred program now and in the future," said Frank Gabriel, NYRA SVP of Racing Operations. Najja Thompson, Executive Director of New York Thoroughbred Breeders, Inc., echoed the sentiment: "We are confident much of the money earned from these purse increases will be reinvested in New York-breds, starting with the Fasig-Tipton New York-bred Select Yearlings Sale in August at Saratoga."

The 2026 Belmont Stakes Racing Festival will be held at Saratoga Race Course from Wednesday, June 3 through Sunday, June 7, highlighted by the 158th edition of the Grade 1, $2 million Belmont Stakes presented by NYRA Bets on Saturday, June 6, with the Festival offering 25 stakes races worth $11.075 million in purses including 10 Grade 1 races among 18 graded stakes. The Saratoga summer meet will open Friday, July 3, and continue through Labor Day, Monday, September 7, highlighted by the 157th renewal of the Grade 1, $1.25 million DraftKings Travers on August 29 and the 99th edition of the Grade 1, $1 million Whitney on August 8, with the 46-day meet offering 20 Grade 1 races among 73 stakes worth over $23.575 million in total purses.

The first 2026 Saratoga condition book will be released in June. With purse levels now confirmed, horsemen weighing their summer shipping options have the numbers they need to plan. Whether the increases are enough to pull horses away from competing circuits will be answered when the entries come in.
