Potente’s six-furlong move at Santa Anita on Monday did more than keep him on schedule. The 1:13.40 drill, followed by a planned ship to Churchill Downs on Wednesday, suggested a colt fit enough to keep climbing into the Kentucky Derby picture and sharp enough to do it on Bob Baffert’s terms.

That matters because Baffert has been operating with a narrow hand this spring. As of April 20, Potente was his lone confirmed Derby runner, leaving the son of Into Mischief as the only current Baffert name tied to Kentucky Derby 152. Potente is not just hanging around the edge of the field, either. He already has 100 Derby points and sits inside the main qualifying group, which means the barn is not shipping a hopeful longshot. It is shipping a legitimate contender.

The workout only reinforced that status. Baffert said he was pleased with the move and especially liked the way Potente galloped out, a useful detail this late in the prep cycle. Horses can look fast in a drill and still leave questions behind them. Potente, by contrast, left the impression of a colt who handled the work cleanly and finished with purpose. That is exactly the kind of signal a Derby barn wants to send before a cross-country move to Louisville.

The recent form is the backbone of the case. Potente won the $201,000 San Felipe Stakes on March 7, defeating 67-1 longshot Robusta by a head and earning 50 Derby points in the process. It was only his second career start, but the result carried real weight because it came against graded-stakes company at Santa Anita. He backed it up on April 4 by running second in the Santa Anita Derby, another key prep that showed he belongs in the conversation with the division’s better West Coast 3-year-olds.

Baffert had thought Potente got to the lead earlier than ideal in the Santa Anita Derby, but the colt still held form against a deep field and stayed on the leaderboard. That mix of speed, stamina and resilience is what makes the shipping schedule meaningful. A horse does not head to Churchill Downs if the barn is merely collecting boxes; it goes when the connections believe the race is within reach.

There is still some movement left in the Derby field. Baffert could add another starter if defections open a path, while Litmus Test, seventh in the Arkansas Derby, sits 23rd on the points list. Stark Contrast appears headed to the American Turf, and Chad Brown has said Iron Honor could point to the Preakness instead. For now, though, Potente is the one Baffert colt with the clearest Derby mandate, and Monday’s work showed he is carrying that load with intent.
