Reagan’s Flame rallies late to win Grade 3 Whimsical Stakes at Woodbine
Reagan’s Flame turned a hot pace into her first graded win, powering past Lithe Spirit to take the Whimsical Stakes and change her sprint profile.

Reagan’s Flame’s first graded stakes victory did more than add a line to her résumé. It moved the 5-year-old mare from useful stakes runner to a serious name in Woodbine’s female sprint division, after she handled a fast, contested pace and still finished strongest in the Grade 3 Whimsical Stakes.
Ridden by Sahin Civaci, Reagan’s Flame broke alertly from post 4, tucked into a stalking spot, and then was taken back to last on the far turn as Ms. Bucherro led the way with Brindi and American Women pressing through an opening quarter in 21.99 seconds and a half in 44.77. That setup looked like it might reward the front-runners, but it instead set the table for a late charge. When the field turned for home, Lithe Spirit swept wide and briefly looked to have control of the race. Reagan’s Flame kept coming, though, and wore that rival down late to win by 1 1/2 lengths in 1:10.11 for six furlongs over Woodbine’s fast all-weather track.

The victory came in Race 9 on the card and served as Woodbine’s first graded stakes race of the 2026 season. It also paid $6.90 to win as the second betting choice, with the favorite Lithe Spirit holding second and Quadruple (GB) finishing third, two lengths back of the runner-up. The winner’s share of the $150,000 purse was $90,000.

For trainer Saffie A. Joseph Jr., the Whimsical was a meaningful placement move. Reagan’s Flame had won her seasonal debut at Gulfstream Park by 6 1/4 lengths in a mile-and-sixteenth handicap, then cut back from four straight route races to six furlongs and handled the shorter trip with authority. Civaci said he had concerns about the sprint cutback because of her recent route form, but she looked sharp in the post parade, and that early confidence proved justified once the pace unfolded in front of her.
The performance also sharpened the case for where Reagan’s Flame fits next. She is by Flameaway out of Mizzen Donald by Mizzen Mast, and now owns a 7-for-20 career record with earnings of $502,351. For BAG Racing Stables LLC, Turf Express Inc. and Watkins Diamond Stables LLC, the Whimsical showed a mare with enough speed, finish and versatility to move beyond allowance-level ambitions and back into higher-end sprint spots at Woodbine and elsewhere.
The Whimsical has been a graded race since 2006 and remains one of Woodbine’s key spring tests for fillies and mares 4 and up, with a history that stretches through winners like Earhart (FR), Play the Music and Our Flash Drive. Reagan’s Flame just added herself to that line, and the way she did it suggests the bigger sprint targets are no longer a stretch.
