Red Square debuts for Wesley Ward in Churchill Downs maiden race

Red Square carried more than a name into Churchill Downs' Sunday card. The American Pharoah colt was set to make his first start in Race 4, a $120,000 maiden special weight at five furlongs on turf for 3-year-olds and up, with Irad Ortiz Jr. named to ride for Wesley A. Ward. Churchill Downs opened the 44th day of its meet at 12:45 p.m. ET in Louisville, giving the debut a prime summer stage, and Ward also sent out Thunder Appeal in the same race.

The pedigree hook is obvious. Red Square is the younger half-brother to Arrest Me Red, the Lael Stables runner who is still carrying the family banner at age 8 with more than $1.5 million in earnings and two graded stakes wins. Arrest Me Red made his mark at Churchill Downs in the 2022 Twin Spires Turf Sprint, taking the Grade II by 1 3/4 lengths in 1:04.18 and finishing that season with a 9-6-0-1 record and $638,500 in earnings. He is a Kentucky-bred son of Pioneerof the Nile out of Maraschino Red by Medaglia d’Oro, a resume that explains why Red Square's first trip to the post mattered before he ever broke from the gate.

Ward's placement of Red Square in a five-furlong turf sprint was the clearest sign that this was more than a curiosity built on bloodlines. Lael Stables already knows what it has in the family, and Ward has kept the operation productive in the turf-sprint lane for years. If Red Square has any of his brother's early speed or ability to handle Churchill's grass, the race will tell it quickly.

The other maiden on the card had its own stallion and family angle. Fast Amy was entered in Race 3, the Kentucky Performing Arts Volunteer Classic, a $120,000 maiden special weight for 2-year-old fillies at 6 1/2 furlongs, with Flavien Prat named to ride for Brendan P. Walsh. The Kentucky-bred filly, foaled March 19, 2024, is by Jackie's Warrior out of Ami's Mesa by Sky Mesa, and her extended female family includes Ami's Holiday and Kopion. Jackie's Warrior had just recorded his first winner on Friday, so Fast Amy's debut also gave the freshman sire another chance to add an early juvenile to the ledger.

Taken together, the two races turned a routine summer maiden card into a straight read on pedigree and intent. Red Square had the family name, the Ward barn, and the Lael connection; Fast Amy had a hot young sire, a deep female line, and Brendan Walsh sending her out under Prat. At Churchill Downs, that is how future stakes horses start announcing themselves.
