The remaining unknowns are real. The Arkansas Derby covered 1 1/8 miles; Churchill Downs will demand an extra furlong, and no prep race fully resolves that question. In a full field, navigating traffic from off the pace introduces a margin-for-error variable that Ortiz will need to manage precisely. The Churchill Downs surface can also differ meaningfully from Oaklawn's, and connections will spend the next five weeks deciding whether Renegade needs an additional prep or ships straight to the Derby.
