Romantic Thor did more than win a Group 3 at Sha Tin. By leading every step of the way in the HK$4.2 million Queen Mother Memorial Cup, he gave the Hong Kong staying division a new name to watch and perhaps a new contender for the season’s biggest test at 2400 meters.

The Danny Shum-trained gelding made his first start at the trip look natural, turning rain-affected ground into an advantage and outstaying his rivals in 2:30.76. Under Matthew Poon, he controlled a seven-horse field at the turf B course on Sunday and held Gentlemen Legacy, who carried 129 pounds, by half a length, with Winning Wing, under 135 pounds, another 1 1/4 lengths back in third. Romantic Thor had only 116 pounds, but he used that light impost with purpose, settling into a rhythm early and never letting the race get away from him.

That matters because this was not a casual jump in distance. Romantic Thor entered the race rated 70, down from a season-opening mark of 78, and had spent much of his time in Hong Kong looking like a horse with ability still to be fully unlocked. Now, after arriving in Hong Kong on 30 July 2025, the son of Justify out of Wedding Vow, by Galileo, finally looks like a stayer with a defined future rather than a puzzle still being assembled.

The profile behind the performance sharpens the case. Known as Capulet when trained by Aidan O’Brien in Ireland, Romantic Thor had already shown he could handle class when winning the Listed Dee Stakes at Chester over 2064 meters in 2024. Sunday’s win, however, was different. It came over 2400 meters, in a race that often reveals whether a horse can shape into a serious local staying force. He not only saw it out, he looked increasingly comfortable the longer the race unfolded.

That is why the next target now feels real rather than aspirational. The Standard Chartered Champions & Chater Cup, Hong Kong’s final Group 1 of the season, is run over the same 2400 meters at Sha Tin and carries HK$13 million in prize money. It also sits inside the HK$10 million Triple Crown framework, a sequence completed only by River Verdon in 1993/94 and Voyage Bubble in 2024/25. If Romantic Thor can reproduce this kind of front-running efficiency at that level, he would force his way into the conversation for one of the season’s defining staying prizes.

The win also carried a financial kick for Peter Lau Pak Fai and Suki Tang Xianfang, with a HK$1.5 million PP bonus on top of the race purse, while Jackson Woo made the presentation. Shum and Poon, who previously won this race together with Butterfield in 2021, now have a horse who may be ready to stand alongside Romantic Warrior in Hong Kong’s upper staying ranks.
