San Felipe, Tampa Bay Derby Results Reshape Early Kentucky Derby Picture
Potente and The Puma each grabbed 50 Derby points on March 7, with Potente winning by a neck for Bob Baffert and The Puma closing from last to first at 7/1.

Potente edged Robusta by a neck in the final strides of the San Felipe (G2) at Santa Anita Park, and The Puma closed from last to first through a nine-horse field at Tampa Bay Downs to win the Tampa Bay Derby (G3) by three-quarters of a length. Both victories came on March 7, each worth 50 qualifying points on the Road to the Kentucky Derby's 50-25-15-10-5 scale, and by Monday both colts had joined the leaderboard in the NTRA's Top 3-Year-Old Poll.
Potente's win was his second from two career starts, improving to 2-for-2 for six-time Kentucky Derby winner Bob Baffert. The bay son of Into Mischief did not make his career debut until Jan. 31, winning a six-furlong maiden before jumping straight to stakes company. He earned a 97 Brisnet Speed Rating for the effort, and the pedigree carries serious weight: Into Mischief has sired a record-tying three Kentucky Derby winners, including 2025 winner Sovereignty. Baffert, who owns a record 17 Triple Crown race wins, still sees upside in the lightly seasoned colt.
Reading too much into the San Felipe result is complicated by what happened to the rest of the field. Odds-on favorite Brant was out of horse midway on the far turn, and 2-1 second choice So Happy made no impact in the final furlongs. Robusta finished ahead of those two after a dull sixth-place run in last month's Robert B. Lewis (G3), but trainer Doug O'Neill, a two-time Kentucky Derby winner himself, still has questions to answer before his colt earns full respect. The top two finishers are expected back for the Santa Anita Derby (G1) on April 4, which should clarify the picture considerably.
In Tampa, The Puma's performance was arguably the more visually striking of the two. The chestnut colt, trained by Gustavo Delgado and ridden by the jockey known on social media as @jjcjockey, overcame a wide trip and swept from last to first at 7/1 odds to record his first career win. Delgado also trains Mage, the 2023 Kentucky Derby winner, giving The Puma a notable stable pedigree to complement his racing record.

The weekend results fed directly into BloodHorse's Derby Dozen rankings, where Paladin, fresh off his Risen Star Stakes victory at Fair Grounds Race Course, continues to lead the field. Paladin was installed as the 5-1 favorite in Derby Future Wager Pool 5, with that pool opening March 13 at noon ET as part of the buildup to the $5 million Kentucky Derby (G1) and the $1.5 million Kentucky Oaks (G1).
Lightly raced horses have now made their mark on consecutive prep weekends, and both Potente and The Puma represent the kind of unfinished profiles that tend to keep the Road to the Kentucky Derby in flux deep into the spring.
