Sandtrap did more than just survive an 18-month layoff at Aqueduct. She won like a filly with another level still ahead of her, rolling home by 4 1/2 lengths in a first-level allowance and reminding the turf division that Chad Brown may have another well-bred runner ready to climb.

The Irish-bred dark bay filly was a heavy 1-5 favorite in the $77,000 race and handled the return with authority, finishing the turf route in 1:37.26. For a horse coming off more than a year away, the performance offered both the result and the signal Brown wanted: Sandtrap was fit enough to win immediately, but still looked like she could improve off the outing. Even with an 82 Beyer Speed Figure, the margin and the way she drew off suggested the figure may not be her ceiling.

Sandtrap’s pedigree gives the comeback extra weight. Foaled May 15, 2022, in Ireland, she is by Lope de Vega out of Zindaya by More Than Ready, the same mare who produced Carl Spackler, a stakes winner and later Grade 1 performer. Bridlewood Farm owns Sandtrap, and Fifth Avenue Bloodstock bred her, keeping her tied to a family that has already proven it belongs in elite turf company.

That family connection is exactly why the win felt bigger than an allowance on paper. Brown has long been one of the sport’s most reliable conditioners of grass fillies, and Sandtrap’s return fit that pattern: a horse given time, brought back carefully, then asked to show her class the first time out. She was transferred to Brown’s shedrow to start 2026 after more than a year away from racing, and the comeback showed that the pause may have been less a setback than a reset.

The next step points upward. Sandtrap is now being aimed at the Grade 1 Just a Game Stakes at Saratoga in early June, a logical spot for a filly with her pedigree, her connections and now a fresh win under her belt. If she moves forward even a little from this Aqueduct return, the allowance score could end up looking less like a tidy comeback and more like the first public sign of a major summer turf player.
