Thanks Gorgeous Storms Home in Sprint Classic Photo Finish at Flemington
Craig Williams timed a $19 last-to-first move to perfection, denying Tycoon Star by a nose in a $500,000 photo finish that reshapes the sprint pecking order.

Craig Williams waited. And waited. Then, in the shadows of the Flemington post, he asked Thanks Gorgeous for everything she had, and the $19 outsider delivered the narrowest possible verdict in the $500,000 Listed VRC Sprint Classic on Australian Cup Day.
The Peltzer filly, trained by Mark and Levi Kavanagh, arrived at the 1200m feature as an afterthought in the market behind $2.30 favourite My Gladiola. Instead, Thanks Gorgeous produced a last-to-first surge on a heavy Flemington surface to collar Tycoon Star ($9.50) by a nose at the wire, with Bacash ($31) a short-head back in third. My Gladiola trailed home fourth, exposing the saturated Flemington track as the great leveller of the afternoon.
It was Thanks Gorgeous' third win of the current preparation and the biggest prize of her career to date. The campaign has built methodically: a maiden breakthrough at Mornington on New Year's Day, a subsequent 1100m straight win at Flemington, and now a Listed stakes success over 1200m at the top of the sprint calendar. Levi Kavanagh admitted the filly had taken time to find her best distance. "We thought she was a specialist at the Caulfield track early on, but she was running at 1200 metres and not quite getting there," he said. Saturday proved the ceiling had been lifted.
Kavanagh acknowledged the finish was not without tension. "The 1100 metres is the key, she got through the ground well and it was a great ride from Craig," he said. "I would have liked him to get there a little bit earlier to keep my heart a little less pounding, but she was in front where she needed to be and that was fantastic."
Williams' timing was the decisive tactical factor. With Tycoon Star hitting the front turning for home and looking dangerous, Williams produced Thanks Gorgeous from the back of the field and found the post at precisely the right stride. The heavy conditions appeared to blunt some rivals more than the winner, a detail Kavanagh was careful to note without overstating.
For Twin Hills Stud sire Peltzer, the result delivers his second stakes-winner and a compelling sprint-bloodline argument for breeders. Bred by Cityview Farm, Thanks Gorgeous is the first winner from Localchella, an Exceed And Excel mare, making the black-type performance doubly significant on the breeding page.
The next move for the Kavanagh camp is genuinely open. Kavanagh has flagged Adelaide sprint targets but conceded the campaign dates back to October. "We have looked at going to Adelaide," he said, "but she has been up for a long time. She's a horse that does not like to spell down at the farm and loves being in work. She's always happy at the stables, so we'll see how she pulls up."
For punters assessing the sprint map ahead: upgrade Thanks Gorgeous with confidence. She handles heavy Flemington ground, has proven the 1200m trip is within range when conditions test rivals, and wins tight finishes from the back. Tycoon Star warrants a downgrade until proven otherwise; the colt led into the straight and was still run down by a $19 shot, a pattern that flags vulnerability any time a horse with superior late kick enters the race.
