Title Role leads international field for $750,000 Belmont Derby

Title Role beat Pacific Avenue by a length in the Jumeirah 2000 Guineas at Meydan on Feb. 28, covering the mile in 1:36.31 and strengthening the case that he is the colt to catch at Saratoga. Simon and Ed Crisford’s runner has now stacked up a sequence that includes the German 2000 Guineas and the Meydan Jumeirah 2000 Guineas Trial, a résumé that gives him the kind of international class this Belmont Derby often rewards.

That form heads straight into the $750,000 Grade 1 Belmont Derby on Saturday, July 4, 2026, at Saratoga Race Course, where the field will go 1 1/8 miles on turf. The race traces back to 1929, when it was run as the Jamaica Handicap, and it took the Belmont Derby Invitational name in 2014. With Belmont Derby day now one of Saratoga’s major summer turf stops, the race again looks built around a transatlantic test rather than a purely domestic one.

Pacific Avenue, who was second to Title Role in Dubai, gives the race an immediate rematch angle. West End Kid is among the U.S.-based hopes, but Title Role’s Meydan line already gives him a reference point the local runners will have to answer. His Dubai win came in a Listed race with a 480,000-dirham purse, and the race has been treated as a launchpad for horses headed into bigger international spots.

The colt’s back story adds to the appeal. Title Role is by Too Darn Hot out of Valiant Girl, was bred by Hascombe & Valiant Stud, and was bought by Blandford Bloodstock for 90,000gns at Book 2 of the Tattersalls October Yearling Sale. He races for Derrick Smith, Mrs. John Magnier and Michael Tabor, giving Coolmore another live chance at a third Belmont Derby victory. On paper, he is the one with the deepest European form, the strongest recent figure and the profile most likely to travel to Saratoga and set the standard.
