Tom Ryan confirmed Sunday morning that Taj Mahal, the undefeated Nyquist colt co-owned by SF Racing, will take on the Grade 2, $750,000 Wood Memorial at Aqueduct Racetrack on April 4, setting up a potential Triple Crown campaign for a horse that has yet to see a finish line from second place.

"The notion is he'll take his shot in the Wood Memorial," Ryan said. "He's done nothing wrong so far, and he's ran himself up the ladder while improving his numbers. He's got some nice time in between after his first two starts were close together. I personally believe the distance is not going to be an issue for him, the question is just if he has the ability to compete with the field that will line up."

The nine-furlong test for 3-year-olds distributes Kentucky Derby qualifying points on a 100-50-25-15-10 scale to the top five finishers, with the winner earning an automatic ticket into the May 2 Derby at Churchill Downs. For an unbeaten horse with momentum building between starts, the Wood represents both opportunity and the stiffest test of his young career.

Taj Mahal was purchased for $525,000 by agent Donato Lanni at the 2024 Keeneland September Yearling Sale on behalf of a deep ownership group that includes SF Racing, Starlight Racing, Madaket Stables, Stonestreet Stables, Bashor Racing, Determined Stables, Golconda Stable, Waves Edge Capital and Catherine Donovan. Ryan noted that Nyquist's consistent success as a sire helped place the colt on the ownership's yearling shortlist at Keeneland. The sire's top progeny currently in training include Breeders' Cup Dirt Mile winner Nysos, trained by Hall of Famer Bob Baffert, and multiple graded stakes winner Knightsbridge under Hall of Famer Bill Mott.

Taj Mahal's pedigree runs deep on the female side as well. He is out of Oola Gal, a stakes-placed mare by Quality Road, and his fourth dam is Strategic Maneuver, a dual Grade 1 winner and successful broodmare.

Taj Mahal will not be without company in the gate. Tom Coulter's Red Zone Runner is also pointing to the Wood Memorial after demolishing his rivals by 15½ lengths in the City of Brotherly Love on March 3 at Parx Racing. Trainer Hugo Padilla expressed full confidence in the plan. "We nominated him. That's the plan, this is where we are aiming," Padilla said. "So far, that's the plan because the horse came out of his last race absolutely outstanding. He's doing very well, he's very happy. We couldn't have asked for any better."

The Wood Memorial headlines a stacked April 4 card at Aqueduct that also features the Grade 2, $300,000 Carter, the Grade 3, $200,000 Gazelle (a Kentucky Oaks qualifier on the same 100-50-25-15-10 points scale), the Grade 3, $150,000 Distaff, the Listed $150,000 Excelsior and the Listed $150,000 Plenty of Grace, which opens New York's turf stakes season.

With 100 Derby points awaiting the Wood Memorial winner and Ryan openly acknowledging the question of whether his colt can match a serious field, April 4 at Aqueduct shapes up as the moment Taj Mahal either announces himself as a genuine Churchill Downs contender or reveals the limits of an unbeaten record built so far in shorter company.
