White Abarrio already has his next measuring stick, and it comes with a built-in rematch with Sovereignty in the Grade 1 Stephen Foster at Churchill Downs. The 7-year-old winner of the Pegasus World Cup and Breeders’ Cup Classic is headed to Louisville on June 27, after using Oaklawn Park to remind the division that he is still one of dirt racing’s most dangerous older horses.

That message landed on April 18, when White Abarrio powered home to beat Sovereignty by two lengths in the Grade 2 Oaklawn Handicap. The 1 1/8-mile race was no soft landing spot. It carried a $1.25 million purse, Sovereignty entered as the reigning Horse of the Year, and Journalism, the 2025 Preakness Stakes winner, finished third. White Abarrio stopped the clock in 1:47.49, the fastest Oaklawn Handicap since Cigar in 1995, and did it in a way that showed he can win from off the pace or closer to the front when the race demands it.

That versatility is part of what makes the Stephen Foster such an appealing target. Saffie Joseph Jr. has said the timing and the 1 1/8-mile trip suit White Abarrio well, and the horse has already shown he can turn a high-level prep into a summer launching point. He is also carrying a résumé that no other horse can match. White Abarrio is the only runner to win the Florida Derby, Whitney, Breeders’ Cup Classic and Pegasus World Cup, a list that puts him in rare company before he even steps back onto the Churchill Downs surface.

The Foster itself has earned this kind of attention. Churchill Downs lists Stephen Foster Day for Saturday, June 27, with gates opening at 11:30 a.m. and first post at 12:45 p.m. The race has recently attracted top-class older horses, with Kingsbarns winning the 2024 renewal, the 43rd running, in 1:48.09 for 1 1/8 miles and Mindframe taking the 2025 edition by one length over Sierra Leone. That kind of recent form gives this year’s race real weight, not just a place on the calendar.

For White Abarrio, a win would do more than add another Grade 1. It would strengthen his hold on the older-horse division and keep him squarely in the Breeders’ Cup Classic conversation, where every major dirt race between now and fall will help define who stands above the rest.
