West Australian jockey William Pike was handed a 12-meeting suspension and fined $4,000 after pleading guilty to excessive whip use aboard Apulia in the Group 1 TAB Australian Cup at Flemington on Saturday.

Racing Victoria stewards found Pike used his whip eight times prior to the 100-metre mark, three more than permitted under Australian Rules AR132(7)(a)(ii). Racing.com reported a total of 16 strikes across the entire run. The ban took effect immediately, covering the period from Sunday, March 29 through Wednesday, April 8, with Pike eligible to resume riding on Thursday, April 9.

Apulia, who Pike was driving hard in the closing stages, finished third in the 2000-metre feature. Light Infantry Man (FR), ridden by Harry Coffey, won the race to go back-to-back in the Australian Cup.

The stewards' report published March 29 stated: "Rider William Pike (Apulia) pleaded guilty to breaching the provisions of AR132(7)(a)(ii) in that he used his whip on eight occasions prior to the 100 metres, which is three more than permitted." On penalty, the stewards noted: "In assessing penalty, account was taken of his guilty plea, record, the totality of his whip use, that his mount finished third in a Group 1 race and the RV Whip Penalty Guidelines."

The 12-meeting absence carries real consequences during the autumn carnival. Stables that had planned rides around Pike will need to rebook, and key engagements at major meetings between now and April 9 are now open.

The disciplinary result made for a stark contrast with the rest of Pike's afternoon at Flemington. Earlier on the same program, he partnered warm favourite Zakouma at $2.30 to a dominant win in the BM84 over 2000 metres.

Pike's case arrives one week after jockey Mark Zahra was suspended seven meetings for excessive whip use. Zahra was permitted to alter the timing of his ban to ride Tentyris in the Group 1 T.J. Smith Stakes at Randwick this Saturday. The successive suspensions signal that stewards are running the Racing Victoria Whip Penalty Guidelines with consistency across the board: Pike's breach occurred in one of the country's most prominent autumn races, and Group 1 status offered no mitigation beyond its role as an aggravating factor in calculating the penalty.
