Davao festival adds debut pickleball tournament, free entry and DUPR divisions

Davao’s newest official festival will put pickleball in front of a much bigger crowd this June, when Duaw Davao adds its first-ever tournament to a month-long program running from June 5 to June 29. The festival has already been built around weekends, especially the third week of June, which gives the sport a chance to meet people where they are instead of asking them to seek out a club event.

The tournament’s draw is simple and powerful: free registration, three categories and DUPR-tiered divisions. That combination lowers the cost of entry for curious newcomers while keeping the competition organized for players at different levels. In a sport still fighting for public recognition across much of Asia, that balance matters. It is how a one-off novelty starts looking like a real pipeline.

Davao already has evidence that the crowd is there. A Kadayawan Festival pickleball tournament in the city drew 200 players, showing that festival-linked pickleball can attract both participants and attention in meaningful numbers. The Duaw Davao addition now gives the city another chance to turn discovery into conversion, with more residents likely to see the game in a setting that feels open rather than exclusive.
