Thailand’s first national pickleball championship opened with the governor of the Sports Authority of Thailand, the president of the National Olympic Committee of Thailand and the association chief on the same stage, a clear sign that the sport has moved from expat curiosity to an institution with official backing.

The Thailand Pickleball Championship 2026, presented by BRAGG, was staged at Pickleball Warehouse in Rangsit, Pathum Thani, from May 1 to 2, with wheelchair competition scheduled for May 3 at Benjakitti Sports Center. Dr. Kongsak Yodmanee, Assoc. Prof. Pimol Srivikorn and Thaya Tipsuwan attended the opening ceremony, underscoring how quickly pickleball has gained legitimacy since the Sports Authority officially recognized it under its act and registered the Pickleball Sport Association in December 2025.

That recognition matters because this championship was not just ceremonial. It marked Thailand’s first recorded ranking points for domestic pickleball athletes, turning what had been a loose tournament scene into a system with measurable progression. The draw was split into Intermediate and Open divisions for men and women, across age groups 19+, 35+, 50+ and 60+, giving players from across the country a structured ladder and a reason to stay in the sport beyond weekend recreation.

The wheelchair event added another layer to that shift. Billed as the first of its kind in Thailand, it was staged with support from the Thai Para Pickleball Club and the Bangkok Metropolitan Administration, showing that the sport’s expansion is not being built only for able-bodied competitors. That breadth strengthens pickleball’s case as a national sport rather than a passing trend.

Dr. Kongsak has already pushed for pickleball to keep advancing toward inclusion in the National Youth Games and the National Games, a move that would deepen the player pipeline and give younger athletes a clearer route into elite competition. For Thailand, that pathway is the real prize: not just another tournament, but a framework for development, sponsorship and long-term credibility.

The scale of the opportunity was already visible at the MLAB Thailand Pickleball Championship 2025, which drew athletes from more than 15 countries, featured more than 800 matches and offered more than 600,000 baht in prize money under World Pickleball Championship rules. With a national championship now in place, Thailand is positioning itself not only as a host, but as one of Asia’s emerging pickleball centers.
