Google moved another step away from a simple blue-link search page, adding short quotes from Reddit and other public conversations directly into AI Mode and AI Overviews. In its May 6 announcement, the company said it was rolling out five changes to the two features, including more links inside the answer, previews that show more context before a click, a section that highlights links from users’ news subscriptions, and personal perspectives pulled from public online discussions and social media.

The shift matters because AI Overviews are no longer a niche experiment. Google launched the feature in May 2024 and said in March 2025 that it was used by more than a billion people. With that scale, every change to how answers are assembled affects who gets seen and who gets buried. Google said the goal is to connect users with “authentic voices” and help them understand where a link will take them before they click.

For search visibility, the winners are obvious. Reddit threads, forum posts and social commentary now have a clearer path into the answer layer, especially when someone is asking for practical advice such as photography tips or first-hand product experience. Creators and publishers with strong original reporting, distinctive expertise or a loyal subscriber base also stand to gain, because Google is pushing more links and surfacing links from news subscriptions directly in the response. Thin pages built only to catch search traffic have a tougher road when Google is explicitly rewarding first-person perspective and deeper context.

This is not a sudden pivot. Google introduced a Perspectives filter in May 2023 to help users find discussion-board posts, Q&A sites and social media content. The new update extends that idea into the core AI experience, where community knowledge is no longer a side door but part of the answer itself.

The relationship with Reddit is also getting deeper. Google and Reddit expanded their partnership in 2024, while Google said the deal did not change its use of publicly available, crawlable content in its products. Reddit chief executive Steve Huffman has separately argued that Reddit’s human-generated corpus is becoming more valuable in the AI era. That theory now has a very visible place inside Google Search.

The commercial stakes are high for publishers, brands and SEO teams watching click-through rates, citation patterns and brand visibility. Reuters and other reports in 2025 noted that a Google search algorithm change briefly rattled Reddit search traffic before it recovered. Google’s latest move suggests the company is betting that searchers want the messy, useful, human stuff first, and the rest of the web only after that.
