If Wikipedia and Reddit together are now pulling more than 25% of ChatGPT citations in the United States, the old media hierarchy is no longer the map that matters. The 5W Citation Source Audit - Q1 2026, released May 11, pulls together nine independently published datasets and hundreds of millions of citations and prompts to show that AI systems are rewarding sources they can extract, repeat and reconcile fastest.

The clearest snapshot comes from Similarweb’s April 14 analysis of nearly 600,000 citation events across January and February 2026. Similarweb defines a citation event as each time ChatGPT, in web browsing mode, references a domain in a response. In that dataset, Wikipedia accounted for 13.15% of U.S. ChatGPT citations and Reddit for 11.97%, putting the two open knowledge ecosystems well ahead of the traditional press. Reuters ranked seventh at 2.27%, while Forbes came in at 1.38% in 18th place. The Wall Street Journal, The New York Times, Bloomberg and the Financial Times did not appear in the top 20.

That ranking is the strategic break with classic public relations thinking. The report’s core argument is that AI engines do not sort authority the way people do. They assemble answers from fragmented source pools, then lean on the pages and posts that are easiest to retrieve, cross-check and quote. That makes source diversity more valuable than a single Tier 1 hit. If a brand only chases elite coverage, it can still miss the places where AI systems actually build answers.

5W’s broader read is that there is no single AI SEO playbook. The report says citation behavior shifts across ChatGPT, Claude, Perplexity, Gemini and Google AI Overviews, and it points to volatility inside the system itself. Reddit’s share on ChatGPT, 5W says, collapsed from about 60% to about 10% of prompt responses in two weeks during September 2025, citing Semrush. That kind of swing is a warning sign for anyone treating AI visibility as a stable ranking problem.

The commercial stakes are rising as search itself changes. Similarweb reported that zero-click searches for news-related queries climbed from 56% to 69% year over year after Google AI Overviews rolled out. OpenAI says ChatGPT search responses may include inline citations and a sources panel, and that search blends natural-language answers with links to relevant web sources. The lesson is blunt: prestige still matters, but presence in Wikipedia, Reddit, review platforms and other high-signal reference spaces now shapes whether a brand shows up in the answer layer at all.
