Dallas baby shower dispute leads to car chase, child shot

Dallas police said 21-year-old Jesus Angel Torres III was later arrested for murder in connection with a baby shower that turned into a family fight, a car chase and gunfire in southeast Dallas. What should have been a celebration ran until 5 a.m. on the 6800 block of Kennisson Drive in the Urbandale neighborhood before it broke apart in the street.

Police said one man exited a Chrysler and fired four shots into the back of another vehicle, striking a 7-year-old girl. A related video report said the child was shot after the baby shower ended in a car chase, a sequence that turned a late-night family gathering into a moving shooting scene in far southeast Dallas.

Dallas police were said to have counted five people shot at the baby shower. Later accounts put the aftermath in slightly different terms: WFAA said one person was killed and four people were injured, including the shooter, while The Dallas Morning News said court documents described an argument between two women at a Red Bird-area event venue that escalated into a gun battle, leaving one man dead and three others injured, one critically. CBS Texas identified the man killed as a Houston resident who died protecting his wife.

Neighbors in Urbandale said gunfire is not uncommon in the area, a bleak backdrop for a party that was supposed to end with family heading home, not cars chasing one another through southeast Dallas. For hosts and families, the sequence is the warning sign: once a celebration runs deep into the morning, a private dispute can become a parking-lot confrontation, then a roadway shooting, before anyone has time to pull people apart and get them home safely.
