Dollar General builds new Topeka store, fall opening possible

Construction is underway at the northwest corner of 37th Street and Gage Boulevard in southwest Topeka, where Dollar General could open a new store this fall. For store associates and district leaders, that means the hiring, training and opening-week scramble are already coming into view.

The project manager on site expects the crew to finish the building by Sept. 24 and says it usually takes about 100 days to build a Dollar General store completely. The chain typically opens about a week or so after construction is finished. The last stretch includes fixture installation, receiving setup, inventory counts and planogram work before customers walk in.

A new store can open jobs for sales associates, keyholders, leads and managers, while also creating chances for experienced workers to step into higher-responsibility roles. Dollar General’s careers search included a Store Manager Candidate listing in Topeka. The opening phase also adds pressure on district support teams, which have to balance training and launch tasks against the daily demands of existing stores.

Dollar General already had 11 locations in Topeka as of March 2025. Another store in southwest Topeka can shift traffic across the district, pulling some shoppers toward 37th and Gage while changing the load on nearby stores that already have to stay stocked and staffed on thin margins.

Dollar General has more than 20,000 stores in 48 states, and its January 31, 2025 annual report listed 20,594 Dollar General, DG Market, DGX and pOpshelf stores across the United States and Mexico. A July 1, 2026 store count put the U.S. total at 20,388, while Dollar General planned to open 800 new stores and remodel 1,500 more in 2024. At the same time, the chain has been reshaping its footprint, with 96 store closures and 45 pOpshelf closures, plus six pOpshelf locations converted into Dollar General stores, planned in early 2025.
