Dollar General opens first Montana store, completes continental U.S. reach

Dollar General opened its first Montana store in Columbia Falls in fall 2023, a launch at 1800 Ninth Street West that gave the discount chain stores in all 48 continental U.S. states. For workers, the opening marked more than a map milestone: it was the start of a new-market operation that had to recruit, train and stabilize a first team while the brand built local recognition from scratch.

The Columbia Falls store arrived after signs of the rollout had already surfaced in Flathead County and Lincoln County. In June 2023, stores were under construction in Columbia Falls and Eureka, and later coverage of the launch said the Columbia Falls location was the first of three Montana stores planned for that fall. Additional Montana communities named in the broader rollout included Libby, Thompson Falls, Hardin, Ronan and Billings.

Dollar General framed the opening as part of its usual neighborhood pitch. The company said, “As America’s general store, we believe each new Dollar General represents positive economic impact, local job opportunities, community development and greater access to affordable products.” That message matters inside the stores, too, because the first associates and managers on the ground are the people who have to make the promise real with daily stocking, customer service and opening routines.

New-state expansion also raises practical questions that Dollar General employees know well: how much labor the company will commit, how fast a store can be brought up to speed, and whether a new market gets the staffing cushion that can be hard to find in rural retail. A first store in a state often becomes the face of the brand for shoppers, community leaders and regulators, which puts more pressure on district managers to set standards quickly and on store teams to handle the first wave of customer expectations.

The Montana opening also fits Dollar General’s larger growth run. In January 2023, the company said it had opened its 19,000th store, and its corporate site now says it has more than 20,000 stores in 48 states. That scale helps explain why a first store in a place like Columbia Falls is not just another ribbon cutting. It is part of the company’s push into smaller and underserved markets, where each launch can create jobs but also expose the limits of a one-size-fits-all labor model.
