Dollar General Opens Hickory Grove Location, Celebrates With Grand Opening Saturday

Dollar General's new Hickory Grove store at 5772 Wylie Ave opened its doors, with a community grand opening celebration set for Saturday, March 28, at 8 a.m.

The first 50 adult customers will receive $10 complimentary gift cards, and the first 100 customers will take home DG tote bags. Anyone planning to show up for the freebies should note the adult qualifier on the gift cards — tote bags go to the broader first-100 crowd regardless of age.

Matthew Simonsen, Dollar General's senior vice president of business intelligence and development, said the Hickory Grove location is expected to bring "positive economic growth for the community through the creation of new jobs and career growth opportunities; increased accessibility to affordable products; the generation of tax revenue and access to Dollar General Literacy Foundation grants." He added: "As part of our mission of Serving Others, we look forward to being a strong business partner and good neighbor, as well as welcoming customers to our new store."

The company did not specify how many employees were hired for the location, or what share of those positions are full-time versus part-time — a detail that matters in communities where Dollar General stores have drawn scrutiny over lean staffing and single-associate shifts.

The opening also makes schools, nonprofit organizations, and libraries within a 15-mile radius of the store eligible to apply for Dollar General Literacy Foundation grants. The foundation, active since 1993, has awarded more than $275 million in grants to nonprofit organizations and helped more than 23.8 million individuals pursue literacy or continued education. The Hickory Grove opening is part of Dollar General's broader retail expansion.
