Dollar General opens new Emmaus store, creating hiring and staffing ripple effects

Emmaus’s new Dollar General is more than a ribbon-cutting: it can shift shifts, training and workload across nearby stores. The chain is using the opening to fill a bench of roles, not just a register.

The new Dollar General at 1328 Chestnut St. in Emmaus has opened with the kind of rollout that can reshape work well beyond one storefront. The store is already drawing customers, and it is set to mark the opening at 8 a.m. Saturday, May 9, with $10 gift cards for the first 50 adult customers and tote bags for the first 100.

For employees, that kind of launch is rarely just about the sales floor. A new location creates a hiring window, gives district leaders a chance to build schedules from scratch, and often forces nearby stores to cover training, truck flow and merchandising pushes while the first weeks of customer traffic settle in. In practice, that can mean a lighter burden for one store if some traffic shifts away, or a heavier one if the district has to borrow labor to get the Emmaus unit up and running.

Dollar General’s careers site says the company is one of the fastest-growing retail companies in the United States, and it groups retail, distribution, fleet, corporate and early-career jobs under one umbrella. Its retail careers page lists Sales Associate, Lead Sales Associate, Assistant Store Manager, Store Manager, District Manager and Regional Director roles, which helps explain why openings like Emmaus often become promotion windows as well as hiring events. New stores typically need a mix of entry-level workers and leaders fast, before routines harden and staffing gaps become harder to fix.

The company also steers applicants to search by store number, using an S plus the five-digit store number in its job portal, and it advertises text-to-apply recruiting with DGJOBS to 25000. That kind of hiring process can move quickly, which matters in a district where one opening can affect multiple schedules at once.

The scale behind the Emmaus store is hard to miss. Dollar General said in its fiscal 2025 annual report that it operated 20,594 stores as of January 31, 2025, and later said it had 20,662 stores in 48 U.S. states and Mexico as of February 28, 2025. At that size, even one new store can influence how hours are split, how managers are promoted, and how much strain lands on the next closest location.

The Chestnut Street address also appears in older local records, a reminder that the site had a retail past before Dollar General moved in. In Emmaus, the opening is not just a new sign on a building. It is a test of how quickly the company can staff, stock and stabilize one more store without pushing the pressure somewhere else.
