A new Dollar General on Chamberlayne Road is set to add six to 10 jobs near the Richmond line, a small hiring pool that puts a spotlight on who gets hired, who transfers in, and how much pressure the new store could put on nearby locations in Northern Henrico.

The store opened at 5258 Chamberlayne Road, and Dollar General planned a grand-opening event for Saturday, April 25, at 8 a.m. The company said the first 50 adult shoppers would get $10 gift cards and the first 100 customers would receive DG tote bags, a familiar opening-day playbook that tends to draw early traffic as the chain plants another flag in a dense local market.

For workers, the bigger story is the staffing model. Six to 10 employees is enough to run a Dollar General, but not enough to absorb much disruption. In a store that small, one callout can affect register coverage, stocking, recovery, and the fast pace of opening and closing tasks. That means training, scheduling, and cross-training matter immediately, especially if the store has to be kept presentation-ready while the customer flow settles in.

The opening also creates a narrow set of opportunities for local applicants and current Dollar General employees looking to move closer to Richmond. Dollar General says many store managers started as part-time associates, and the company continues to lean on internal promotion, training and development, tuition reimbursement, and access to debt-free degrees as part of its recruiting pitch. For associates already working in the Richmond-area network, a new store can mean transfer chances, but it can also mean a tougher staffing balance at nearby stores if experienced workers shift locations.

Dollar General senior vice president of business intelligence and development Matthew Simonsen said the new store should bring positive economic growth through new jobs, career opportunities, better access to affordable products, added tax revenue, and access to Dollar General Literacy Foundation grants. The foundation says schools, nonprofits, and libraries within 15 miles of a Dollar General store, distribution center, or corporate office may apply for support. It says it has provided more than $172 million since 1993 and has helped more than 11 million people.

The company also says eligible full-time and part-time workers can access paid parental leave and adoption assistance. Dollar General’s parental leave policy offers two weeks of paid parental leave, and birth mothers receive an additional six weeks of paid maternity leave.

The Henrico opening fits into a broader expansion push. Dollar General operated 20,594 stores as of Jan. 31, 2025, and the company said it planned to open roughly 450 more U.S. stores in 2026. In Richmond’s already crowded retail landscape, the Chamberlayne Road location is another reminder that Dollar General’s growth still depends on small teams, tight labor math, and the constant need to keep stores staffed without stretching workers too thin.
