Dollar General’s Quarryville move is expected to add about 6 to 10 jobs, turning a simple address change into a small staffing bump for Lancaster County. The company plans to relocate its store from 17 East State Street to a new 8,500-square-foot site at 315 West 4th Street, with opening expected in the coming weeks if construction stays on schedule.

For workers, the bigger box matters as much as the new sign. A larger floor plan can mean more room for freight, more space for seasonal sets, and less of the cramped backroom pressure that often defines Dollar General stores built for a lean footprint. It also usually means a heavier launch period, with merchandising, stocking, cleaning, and sidewalk display work all landing at once as the new location gets ready for customers.

That work fits the company’s own description of sales associate duties. Dollar General says associates stock merchandise, recover merchandise, clean the store, and set up sidewalk displays. In a relocation like this, those same tasks can become more demanding during the first weeks, when a team is still learning traffic patterns, reset timing, and how to move product through a new layout.

The staffing question is more than academic for current employees. The report says the move will create new jobs, but it does not spell out how many of the old East State Street workers will transfer. That means the most practical outcome may be a mix of transfers, new hires, and scheduling changes as the district team decides how to staff the larger store. For associates already working in Quarryville, the move could change commute times only slightly if they transfer, while others may face a new drive depending on where they live and which shifts they can cover.

The store is moving into a site that was occupied by Rite Aid before the chain’s bankruptcy pushed more closures across the country. Rite Aid filed for Chapter 11 on May 5, 2025, and the company’s Quarryville location at 315 W. Fourth St. was listed among 68 stores on a closure list. For a borough of 2,843 people, according to the 2020 census, that kind of turnover is highly visible and can quickly reshape where local retail jobs sit.

Quarryville was founded in 1791 and incorporated in 1892, and Dollar General already has a footprint there. Its store directory lists both the current East State Street location and another store at 33b Friendly Dr. The new West 4th Street site adds another layer to that local presence, and for workers it points to the real story: one store is moving, but the bigger change is where the hours, stocking, and job openings will land next.
