Home Depot expands driver roles across local delivery and yard operations

Home Depot now gives drivers their own Drivers area under Warehouse and Delivery Jobs on its careers site. Home Depot’s driver jobs sit closer to logistics than the sales floor, and that changes who will get value from them. If you want local routes, hands-on loading, and a shift built around getting products where they need to go, this can be a strong fit. If you want a lighter, more stationary routine, the physical demands and timing pressure are the real tradeoff.

What the role actually looks like

The work is built around vehicles, delivery windows, and customer-facing handoffs, not the kind of floor coverage you associate with an in-store shift.

A Boston Box Truck Delivery Driver posting tied to Tewksbury, Massachusetts, says drivers “drive local home improvement stores to load trucks, then deliver packages safely and on time in all weather conditions,” and lists the work at about 8 to 10 hours. That is the core of the job: start at the store, load the truck, stay on route, and finish with a timely delivery even when the weather turns.

That mix makes the job less like long-haul trucking and more like a physically active local service role. The driver is part mover, part dispatcher, part customer-service face at the end of the run. In practice, that means you need to be comfortable with loading, timing, and representing the company at the point where a customer is waiting on a delivery.

The main driver paths are not the same job

Home Depot’s postings show several different formats. Rental Delivery Driver I roles require CDL A and are home daily, which points to a more predictable local schedule for people who want to sleep in their own bed at night. Yard Driver CDL roles focus on moving equipment and trailers within or around the facility rather than running public delivery routes.

Box-truck drivers are out on local deliveries, rental delivery drivers are handling a CDL-requiring route that still comes home daily, and yard drivers keep trailers and equipment moving where the operation needs them. If you are comparing openings, the right question is not just pay, but whether you want road time, customer stops, or yard-based equipment movement.

The schedule also differs from a typical in-store role. Instead of a shift that bends around department coverage, the driver day is anchored to route timing, loading, and delivery commitments. That can be a relief if you prefer structure, but it also means less flexibility once the truck is on the road.

How the delivery network expanded

The company has been building a bigger delivery machine around these jobs for years. In 2018, Home Depot described a “One Supply Chain” vision to streamline logistics, increase product velocity, and reach the majority of customers in two days or less. Later that year, it partnered with Roadie for express, same-day delivery as it pushed stores into a more active role as distribution points.

The money and scale behind that shift were not small. In February 2019, Home Depot backed Roadie’s same-day delivery service with a $37 million boost, and Roadie said it reached 89% of households with fulfillment by motorist.

Home Depot offers same-day, next-day, scheduled, and bulk delivery. Select items ordered by 4 p.m. qualify for same-day delivery, subject to availability.

The delivery network kept widening after that. On Oct. 6, 2021, Home Depot announced a partnership with Walmart GoLocal to enhance local delivery capabilities, and Home Depot online orders were set to move through Walmart’s white-label service. In May 2024, Instacart announced a nationwide Home Depot partnership offering same-day delivery in as fast as an hour. On Jan. 22, 2025, Home Depot added partnerships with DoorDash and Uber Eats for on-demand and scheduled delivery.

What candidates should verify before applying

Before you apply, check the details that shape the day-to-day reality, not just the job title. The same role family can mean very different work depending on vehicle type, license requirements, and whether the schedule is home daily or route-based.
