Home Depot nears opening at new Schertz retail hub near San Antonio

A new Home Depot at Schertz Station is in its final construction phase, putting a major home improvement anchor on one of the San Antonio area’s busiest growth corridors. The store sits at 18541 Ripps-Kreusler Road in Schertz, and the project’s footprint includes a 107,519-square-foot main store and a 28,113-square-foot garden center.

Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation records peg the job at $13 million, with construction listed as starting Oct. 15, 2025 and completion set for Aug. 1, 2026. The filing shows the scale of the build clearly: more than 135,000 square feet combined for lumber, tools, garden supplies and other home improvement lines that draw both do-it-yourself shoppers and contractors.

Signs of the store’s approach are already visible from Schertz Station and along I-35, where “coming soon” banners have gone up as the shell work nears the finish line. Recent coverage said the opening is expected in early 2027, which would make the Schertz store one of the newer large-format retail additions in the northern San Antonio market.

For Home Depot workers, a store of this size usually means more than a new address on the map. A full-box location with a large garden center needs coverage across merchandising, delivery, freight, lot, garden, and sales-floor operations, especially when the spring and summer project rush hits the San Antonio area. The mix of lumber, power tools, paint and patio merchandise also tends to reward associates with product knowledge, especially in departments where contractors and pro customers expect quick answers and stocked shelves.

Schertz Station itself is becoming a broader retail destination. The 72-acre development along I-35 North and Cibolo Valley Drive is being developed by Merit CRE, which has said it is investing more than $65 million in the hub. Other national retailers and restaurants are also moving into the site, reinforcing the corridor’s pull for shoppers and workers moving through the fast-growing suburbs north of San Antonio.

Home Depot has also been adding stores nationally. In March 2026, the company said it planned to open 12 new U.S. stores across eight states this year, and Schertz is part of that wider footprint push. In a market where big-box retail is spreading along I-35, the new store gives nearby residents another place to buy building materials and gives associates another large floor to build a career in a busy Texas trade market.
