Customers who bought a recalled Generac portable generator need to stop and check it now. The hazard is serious: when the units are first filled with gasoline, fuel can leak from the carburetor, creating a fire or burn risk that can lead to severe injury or death.

The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission announced the recall on April 16, 2026, covering about 149,400 generators in the United States and about 260 in Canada. The affected units were sold at Home Depot, Lowe’s and other home-improvement and hardware stores nationwide, as well as online, from May 2025 through February 2026, with prices ranging from $600 to $1,300. Generac has received 114 reports of fuel leaks, but no injuries have been reported in this recall.

The model names in the alert include GP3600, GP4000DF, GP6500, GP6500E, GP6500EDF, GP6700EDF, GP8000E, GP9200E and GP9500ETF, with multiple model numbers tied to the notice. For associates on the floor or in the service desk line, the practical answer is simple: direct shoppers to compare the model information on their generator against the recall list and send them to the official CPSC page or Generac’s repair process if the unit is covered.

CPSC says some owners do not need to stop using their generator. Customers whose units have already been filled enough to move the fuel gauge off “E” or who have used the generator without any leakage may continue using it. Everyone else should stop use and arrange a free repair through Generac. That distinction matters on the sales floor, where the immediate question from a homeowner is likely to be whether the machine is safe to keep running before storm season or a jobsite outage.

The recall is also part of a pattern for the brand. In September 2023, CPSC and Generac recalled about 64,000 generators, including some DR Power units, after fuel tanks could fail to vent properly and overpressurize, expelling fuel when opened. That earlier action was updated on October 10, 2023, to add DR Power generators and raise reported incidents from 27 to 29, including three severe burn injuries. Home Depot’s public recalls page tells customers to use CPSC information and manufacturer instructions for affected products, a reminder that associates should treat every generator complaint as a safety issue first, not just a product question.
