McDonald’s Germany launches viral Grimace menu with purple burger, shake, pie
McDonald’s Germany turned Grimace into a purple burger, shake and pie rollout, a viral stunt that also tested how much extra work crews can absorb.

McDonald’s Germany’s new Grimace menu put a purple burger, a cream-topped shake and a pie into the same rush order stream, turning a social-media gimmick into a real test of kitchen pace and crew precision.
The campaign launched in Munich on April 29 and is set to run for around three weeks in participating restaurants. McDonald’s Germany describes Grimace as the new Head of Birthdays and says every day can be a birthday, a message built to keep the mascot front and center while the chain leans on limited-time novelty to drive attention.
For workers, the menu is more than a color swap. The Purple BBQ includes a 100% beef patty from Germany, Purple Cheese, Purple Sauce, Western Sauce, onions and iceberg lettuce in a purple bun. The lineup also adds Purple Berry & Cream Dip, Heiße Purple Cream Cheese Tasche and McPops® Purple Party, while the returning Grimace Shake comes with cream topping and a flavor McDonald’s keeps intentionally vague. Customers can order the Purple Menu with Purple BBQ, Big Mac, 9-piece Chicken McNuggets or McPlant Nuggets, plus fries and either the Purple Berry & Cream Dip or another sauce.
That kind of build-out matters behind the counter. A stunt menu that lives or dies on color and presentation can mean more component checks, more questions at the front counter and more room for slowdown when a lunch rush hits. The purple bun, the separate sauces, the shake topping and the limited-time pastries all add steps that crews have to move through without letting standard speed slip.
McDonald’s Germany is also extending the campaign beyond the tray. Some restaurants are being wrapped in purple packaging, and selected events and social media activations will feature Grimace. The company is pairing the rollout with a charity angle as well: for each Grimace keychain sold, €2 goes to the McDonald’s Kinderhilfe Stiftung.
The purple push is not the first time Grimace has been used this way. In the United States, McDonald’s launched the Grimace Birthday Meal and purple shake on June 12, 2023 for Grimace’s 52nd birthday, along with merchandise, a free game and a donation drive for Ronald McDonald House Charities. Germany brought the Grimace Shake to the market in July 2025 as part of Mit Mecces um die Welt, after the character had already become a viral internet fixture, with #GrimaceShake climbing past one billion views on TikTok.
That history explains why the company keeps returning to Grimace. The purple mascot still pulls attention, but every time McDonald’s turns him into a menu event, the burden lands on crews who have to turn a meme into a product line, one order at a time.
