Speaking to IGN at the Game Developers Conference, Marvel Games executive producer Danny Koo confirmed that a Nintendo Switch 2 version of Marvel Rivals is actively in development. The statement ends months of hedged language from the studio and gives Nintendo's incoming platform one of the highest-profile live service games on the market.

IGN's Rebekah Valentine asked Koo directly whether a Switch 2 version was still being considered, and he confirmed it was already in progress: "We're working on it, but when we have news, we'll announce that one." Valentine then reworded the question to seek double confirmation. Koo reaffirmed, saying simply, "We will do it."

The confirmation represents a meaningful shift in tone from NetEase's earlier position. At the DICE Summit in Las Vegas, Marvel Rivals producer Weicong Wu had described a Switch 2 port as possible but conditional: "We're already in contact with Nintendo and working on some development kits. And whenever we find that we could provide great performance for our game on Switch 2, we're open to that." Wu also explained why the original Switch never received the game, saying the first-generation hardware could not deliver the performance the game requires. Marvel Rivals game director Guangyun Chen had separately noted that the development delay was at least partly due to NetEase being unable to obtain a Switch 2 development kit closer to launch. Clearly, that obstacle has since been resolved.

Since its launch in 2024, Marvel Rivals has become hugely successful. While originally seen as an Overwatch clone with Marvel characters, it has surpassed the game it was inspired by in the eyes of many players. The game launched on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, and PC on December 6, 2024, with 33 heroes playable at release, and IGN awarded it an 8/10, writing that it "may be following closely in the slipstream of the hero shooters that have come before it, but by doing so Marvel Rivals has firmly placed itself in a strong position to take the crown for itself."

Season 7 of Marvel Rivals recently kicked off, adding the new character White Fox as a playable hero. White Fox originated in the 2015 mobile game Marvel: Future Fight and functions as a strategist, capable of healing teammates, damaging enemies, and inflicting buffs and debuffs. The season reveal trailer hints her ultimate ability takes the form of a magical nine-tailed fox.

No release date has been set for the Switch 2 version. It is not clear how far along development is, but Koo indicated that when there is news to share, an announcement will follow. The Switch 2 itself does not yet have a confirmed launch date, though Nintendo has scheduled a Direct for April 2. IGN noted the console is expected to include mouse-like controller functionality that could make playing a precision-dependent shooter like Marvel Rivals closer to the PC experience.

Koo also addressed whether Marvel Rivals could eventually reach mobile platforms like Android or iOS, and the answer was less encouraging: he acknowledged the game simply would not work on mobile in its current state. For now, Switch 2 is the next frontier, and the studio is no longer leaving itself room to walk back the commitment.
