Pokémon Champions, developed by The Pokémon Works and published by The Pokémon Company, is a spin-off focused squarely on multiplayer battling — and it arrives on April 8, two weeks from today's announcement out of Bellevue, Washington. The game pits trainers in turn-based, one-on-one Single Battles or two-on-two Double Battles. Unlike the mainline RPG series, there is no story to chase and no region to explore; players rely on careful strategy and knowledge of type advantages, abilities, and status effects to secure victory over opponents.

There is no separate Switch 2 version, but a free update available for owners of Nintendo's newest console will provide a graphical upgrade over the original Switch. The official press release from The Pokémon Company International states simply that the game "will also be playable on Nintendo Switch 2." A port to iOS and Android will follow later in 2026. Once the mobile version arrives, players will be able to engage in Pokémon battles with one another regardless of what platform they are playing on.

The competitive implications are significant for anyone working on or playing the Video Game Championship circuit. VGC will transition to Pokémon Champions as the standard platform for all competitive matches from April 8, and the Indianapolis Pokémon Regional Championships, running May 29 through 31, will be the first live, official Pokémon Championship Series event to use Pokémon Champions as its exclusive competitive platform. The game will remain the platform for Premier Events moving forward, including the North America International Championships from June 12 to 14 and the Pokémon World Championships from August 28 to 30. Competitors don't have to wait until Indianapolis to play in an official event: Global Challenge I takes place May 1 through 4 and will feature Pokémon Champions as its platform.

The launch trailer, posted to the official Nintendo YouTube Channel, confirmed three new Mega evolutions carrying abilities that will reshape early competitive rosters. Mega Meganium will have the newly discovered ability Mega Sol, which lets the Pokémon use its moves as if the weather were harsh sunlight. That means Solar Beam fires in a single turn with no setup, and Synthesis heals at maximum efficiency, even through rain. Mega Emboar has the Mold Breaker ability, which causes its moves to be unaffected by the ability of the target. Mega Feraligatr's newly discovered ability Dragonize turns Normal-type moves into Dragon-type moves and boosts their power by 20%. All three have been given special moves that have never been seen before in the series.

Recruitment mechanics will matter for anyone who has invested in Pokémon Home. Players can recruit Pokémon by connecting to the Pokémon Home app, where compatible Pokémon transferred from the RPG series and from Pokémon GO will be available to join a team; alternatively, one random Pokémon per day can be recruited and used for one week, with the option to spend Victory Points to recruit multiple Pokémon in a single day. Players who store the Chesnaught, Delphox, Greninja, and Eternal Flower Floette befriended in Pokémon Legends: Z-A in Pokémon Home and bring them to Pokémon Champions as visitors can obtain their Mega Stones from the in-game mailbox.

Pokémon Champions is a free-to-start game, which has understandably prompted some concern. Players have the option to purchase the Pokémon Champions + Starter Pack bundle, which includes 50 additional Pokémon in storage, the "Battle! (Trainer Battle)" song from Pokémon: Let's Go, Pikachu! and Pokémon: Let's Go, Eevee!, 30 Teammate Tickets, and 50 Training Tickets. A Premium Battle Pass and Membership will also be available for purchase in the game. In-game currency can be used to permanently recruit team members, amend Pokémon moves and stats, and purchase costumes and music.

Pokémon Champions is the first game from The Pokémon Works, a joint venture between The Pokémon Company and ILCA. For the Nintendo development teams and localization staff who have spent the past year building out a platform designed to absorb the entire competitive ecosystem, April 8 is just the starting gun; the calendar running from Indianapolis through Worlds in August will be the real stress test.
