Nintendo Brings Tomodachi Life: Living the Dream to Switch in April 2026
Nintendo confirmed April 16 as the launch date for Tomodachi Life: Living the Dream, the first new entry in the series in over 13 years.

After more than thirteen years without a new entry, Nintendo is bringing the Tomodachi series back on April 16, 2026, with Tomodachi Life: Living the Dream arriving on Nintendo Switch. The announcement follows a 22-minute dedicated Direct presentation on January 29, 2026, that walked through Mii creation tools, island customization, location exploration, and romantic relationships.
The game is the third in the Tomodachi series, following Tomodachi Collection in 2009 and Tomodachi Life in 2013. Nintendo positioned the launch date reveal as a milestone, billing the game as the first new Tomodachi Life entry in more than 10 years. It will also be playable on Nintendo Switch 2 via backward compatibility.
Nintendo's customization pitch centers on what it calls quirks: individual behaviors players can assign to their Mii characters. "Add some flourishes to Mii characters by gifting them little quirks that can give them even more individuality, like poses they may strike, how they enjoy their food or having them toss and turn while they sleep," Nintendo said in materials accompanying the Direct. Players can also assign favorite phrases to shape how Miis speak. Additional features highlighted in the presentation include island building, picking up and dropping Miis, and player-created items.
The release also fulfills a specific commitment Nintendo made in 2014, when the Nintendo 3DS version of Tomodachi Life launched without inclusive relationship options. Nintendo acknowledged at the time that patching the original was not feasible, and promised a future entry would address it. Living the Dream allows players to create male, female, or non-binary characters and includes same-gender relationships.
Community response has been striking. The announcement trailer posted to X by Nintendo Japan became one of the company's most liked posts on the platform, surpassing engagement from the Nintendo Switch 2 reveal. On Reddit, fans cited both nostalgia and the expanded customization system as reasons for excitement, with one user writing, "I am SO ridiculously excited. I used to play this all the time on my 3DS in my college dorm."
The game was originally revealed on March 27, 2025, at the end of a Nintendo Direct alongside Rhythm Heaven Groove, with both described as the first new entries in their respective series in over a decade. A second Direct on September 12, 2025, introduced Mii creation and interactions and confirmed a Spring 2026 window before the January 29 presentation locked in the April 16 date.
Pre-orders are live on Nintendo eShop and My Nintendo Store. In Australia, the game is listed at AU$79.95. UK pre-orders include a themed magnetic photo frame. The game's soundtrack, which was added to the Nintendo Music mobile app a week after the January Direct, is also scheduled for Nintendo Switch release on April 16.
