SEGA launched Virtua Fighter 5 R.E.V.O. World Stage for Nintendo Switch 2 on March 26, marking the debut of the beloved 3D fighting series on a Nintendo platform. The Switch 2 port arrives carrying the full feature set of its console counterparts, with the Nintendo Switch 2 version coming later than other versions but featuring full cross-play and rollback netcode.

The release features full cross-play, allowing competitive online battles between Nintendo Switch 2, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series XS and Steam users, along with rollback netcode support, new moves and combos, balance updates, and key improvements to the training mode. There is also World Stage mode, a new single-player experience where players challenge powerful rivals on a solo quest to become the ultimate fighter. For Nintendo workers and Switch 2 owners who have watched fighting game heavyweights like Street Fighter 6 land on the platform, the arrival of Virtua Fighter, a series that first defined 3D combat in arcades back in 1993, carries weight beyond a standard third-party port.
A free demo is now available for Nintendo Switch 2, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series XS via their respective digital storefronts. The demo provides access to six playable fighters, including Wolf, Jacky, Eileen, Pai, Goh, and Jean, with an opportunity to try out Arcade, Training, and World Stage mode up to Booth 2.

Two editions are available on Switch 2. A standard digital edition is priced at $19.99 USD MSRP. Those who opt for the physical or digital 30th Anniversary Edition, priced at $49.99 USD MSRP, unlock additional content. The 30th Anniversary Edition contains the base game, a VF 30th Anniversary Swimsuit Costume Set, a VF 30th Anniversary Soundtrack Collection, VF Pre-Production Artwork, a Legendary Pack, a Yakuza Series Collaboration Pack, and VF 30th Anniversary Ranking Titles. Buyers purchasing any Switch 2 edition, digital or physical, receive the SEGA Hardware Customization Item "Genesis," based on the legendary SEGA hardware, at no added cost; the in-game item can be equipped by all 19 base characters.

The base product on the Nintendo eShop contains only the base game; a bundle including the base game and additional content is also available, and Nintendo advises buyers to take care to avoid duplicate purchases.

Originally released in 2006, Virtua Fighter 5 has been updated several times, remastered by RGG Studios with the Dragon Engine, received rollback netcode, and has now been ported to current platforms including the Switch 2. The Switch 2 version ships with multiple online modes for casual and ranked play, a robust training mode, character-specific training, an offline versus mode, an arcade mode, and the new World Stage mode. Frame rate remains locked at a smooth 60fps, which is vital for modern fighters.

SEGA holds the distinction of being the first publisher to rank number one three separate times, in 2016, 2020, and 2024, in Metacritic's Game Publisher Rankings. For a company whose internal Ryu Ga Gotoku Studio handled the Dragon Engine remaster, getting a fully cross-play-enabled Virtua Fighter onto Nintendo hardware represents a meaningful expansion of the franchise's reach. The series had largely evaded Nintendo platforms for years, making this Switch 2 release a notable milestone for players on the system.
