Dog fight at Palm Harbor Walmart injures five, prompts trespass warnings
Five people were hurt when two non-service dogs fought inside a Palm Harbor Walmart, and the owners were trespassed.
Five people were hurt when a terrier mix and a Chihuahua mix fought inside the Walmart at 35404 US 19 North in Palm Harbor, Florida, turning a midday shopping trip into a floor safety issue for three employees and the two dog owners. Pinellas County deputies said the dogs were not service animals, no criminal charges were filed, and both owners were later issued trespass warnings from the store.
Deputies were called shortly after 12:45 p.m., and Animal Control also responded. One person was taken to the hospital for high blood pressure, while the others had minor injuries, and both dogs went home with their owners. Walmart spokesperson Kelly Hellbusch said, “The safety of our associates and customers is a top priority.” For store teams, the episode is a reminder that a customer who brings in the wrong animal can create an emergency that lands on cashiers, greeters and front-end managers before it reaches anyone in uniform.
Walmart’s policy is straightforward: it welcomes service animals as defined by the ADA and does not allow pets in its stores. When it is not obvious that a dog is a service animal, employees may ask only two questions, whether the dog is required because of a disability and what work or task it has been trained to perform. Workers cannot demand certification, a vest or other ID, or pry into the customer’s diagnosis.
If a dog is out of control or not housebroken, the ADA allows the business to ask that it be removed, while still offering the customer service without the animal. In practice, that means associates should back away, get a manager or security involved, and avoid trying to separate fighting animals by hand. The Palm Harbor scene showed how fast a pet dispute can escalate from a policy issue to an employee injury.
After any injury, the next steps run through Walmart’s own systems. The company’s leave page directs leaders to mySedgwick to request leave, stay up to date on the claim, communicate with Sedgwick and report the return-to-work date. Walmart’s claims page says associates can file or check medical claims through the plan administrator and claim forms, and the 2026 benefits book lists accident insurance among associate benefits.
