Michigan Walmart Evacuated After Bomb Threat, No Device Found
A bomb threat called into the FBI tip line emptied the Houghton Lake Walmart for nearly four hours on March 12 before state police canines cleared the building.

A bomb threat reported through the FBI Tip Line forced the evacuation of the Houghton Lake Walmart on March 12 and triggered a multi-agency response that kept the store closed for nearly four hours, sending Michigan State Police canine units through the building before authorities declared the scene clear.
Roscommon County Central Dispatch received the threat at approximately 11:19 a.m., according to the Denton Township Police Department. Officers from Denton Township Police, the Roscommon County Sheriff's Office, and Michigan State Police responded to the scene. The store was evacuated and the surrounding area secured while Michigan State Police dispatched both a bomb squad and Explosives Detection Canines to conduct a full sweep of the premises. The Denton Township Fire Department and Roscommon Township Fire Department assisted in securing the perimeter.
The ripple effects reached two nearby schools. Houghton Lake Community Schools placed Collins Elementary School and Houghton Lake Junior/Senior High School into secure mode as a precaution, restricting who could enter or leave either campus while the investigation was active. Superintendent Ben Williams communicated directly with families during the lockdown. "At this time, Collins Elementary School and the Jr./Sr. High are in a secure mode due to a threat to a local business a few miles away," Williams said. He was clear that the disruption stayed outside the classroom doors: "This is a precautionary measure and teaching and learning is continuing as normal inside our schools." The district held that posture until law enforcement issued an all-clear. "We will be in secure mode which means we are restricting entry and departures into the schools until we receive the all clear from local law enforcement," Williams said.

After Michigan State Police Explosives Detection Canines completed a sweep of the Walmart building, officials reported no device or credible threat had been found. The scene was declared secure at approximately 3:15 p.m. and the area reopened. Authorities thanked the public for their cooperation during the response.
No arrests or suspects were identified in any of the reports from the incident. Whether investigators have identified who submitted the threat through the FBI Tip Line remains an open question.
