Rockford Walmart Stabbing Suspect Awaits Trial as Store Safety Concerns Grow
Two years after 18-year-old Jason Jenkins was fatally stabbed on the job, Timothy Carter still awaits trial in the Winnebago County Jail as motions and evaluations crawl forward.

Nearly two years have passed since Jason Jenkins, an 18-year-old Walmart associate, was stabbed to death on the floor of the Northridge Drive store where he worked. The man accused of killing him, Timothy Carter of Cabery, Illinois, remains jailed at the Winnebago County Jail as court filings, ongoing motions, and evaluations keep the case from moving to trial.
Carter faces three counts of first-degree murder and a hate-crime charge added by a Winnebago County grand jury, which cited the alleged racial motive described in the criminal complaint. He was due back in court on March 19, with another scheduled appearance at 9 a.m. April 9, according to court records and earlier reporting by the Rockford Register Star.
Surveillance footage captured the sequence of events inside the store on March 24, 2024. Around 6 p.m., Carter entered the Walmart at 3849 Northridge Dr. and removed two knives from a retail shelf, described in court documents as a kitchen knife and a hunting knife. Investigators said footage then showed him giving "dirty looks" to Black customers before approaching Jenkins from behind and stabbing him once in the lower back. A female store employee told police she heard Carter utter a racial slur and Jenkins screaming for help. Witnesses said Carter shouted racial slurs during the attack.
Jenkins was taken to a local hospital, where he died at 7:48 p.m., less than two hours after the stabbing, according to the Winnebago County Coroner's Office. Brosnan Security guards detained Carter minutes after the attack after he dropped the knife and surrendered in an aisle as other shoppers recorded the scene on their phones. Rockford Police arrived and made the formal arrest.
At a pretrial hearing on March 28, 2024, Carter appeared at the Winnebago County Criminal Justice Center in a red jail jumpsuit and handcuffs, represented by public defender Nick Zimmerman. Judge Scott Paccagnini granted the Winnebago County State's Attorney's motion to deny pretrial release, ordering Carter to remain jailed on the murder charges.

Roughly two dozen of Jenkins' family members, friends, and supporters attended that hearing. Among them was the Rev. K. Edward Copeland of New Zion Baptist Church of Rockford, who came to show support for the family. "People who are a danger to the community shouldn't be let out," Copeland said. "The issue is 'Are they a danger?'"
Court documents reviewed by local outlets also detail a claim Carter made to officers after the attack: that he had sought mental health care earlier that day, going first to Rosecrance at 605 Mulberry St. and claiming he was denied treatment. Carter said he then threatened to kill himself, was transferred by Rosecrance staff to UW Health SwedishAmerican Hospital at 1401 E. State Street, and was released without receiving mental health treatment before traveling to the Walmart. Neither facility has publicly confirmed or disputed Carter's account of what happened.
The attack occurred during what Rockford police described as one of the most violent weeks in the city's recent history. Three days later, on March 27, 2024, four people were killed in a separate stabbing and beating spree on the city's east side. Hundreds had already gathered in the Walmart parking lot for a vigil honoring Jenkins in the days immediately following the attack, and his murder inside a working retail store drew national attention at the time.
For the associates who clock in each day at stores like Northridge Drive, the slow-moving case has kept the question of workplace safety in plain view. A security contractor, Brosnan Security, was present at the store and did detain Carter after the fact, but the attack itself unfolded inside the sales floor during a busy evening shift, with two weapons taken directly off a retail shelf.
