Amazon boosts Career Choice to help Whole Foods workers move up

Amazon is putting $1 billion more into Career Choice as part of its Future Ready 2030 plan, a $2.5 billion commitment to expand education and skills training and prepare at least 50 million people for the future of work. For Whole Foods Market employees, the move puts a long-running Amazon benefit closer to the center of everyday career decisions: stay in the current role, move into store leadership, or use the credential for a different path entirely.

Career Choice has been part of Amazon’s hourly-worker pitch since 2012. Amazon says the program helps eligible hourly employees build skills for career success at Amazon or elsewhere, with a network of more than 400 eligible schools globally. The company describes the benefit as prepaid education and skills training, designed to remove the upfront cost that keeps many retail and warehouse workers from enrolling in college or certificate programs.

The scope matters for Whole Foods, where store work often starts with roles such as cashier, grocery clerk, shopper, or department teammate and can branch into team leadership. Whole Foods says its careers site includes a robust catalog of Career Development programs, with courses focused on leading others and building the skills needed for Associate Team Leader, Team Leader, Associate Store Team Leader and Store Team Leader jobs. That makes Career Choice more than a generic perk. It is a bridge between hourly work and the next rung up the ladder, or a stepping stone to a new field outside the store.

Amazon has also said Career Choice can cover full college tuition, along with high school diplomas, GEDs and English as a Second Language certifications for front-line employees. At one point, some front-line workers were eligible after as little as three months on the job. For workers trying to build a credential without pausing work or taking on student debt, that timing and cost structure can matter as much as the class list itself.

Whole Foods says it now has more than 500 stores in the United States, Canada and the United Kingdom, with more than 100 new locations in development. Its jobs site shows thousands of open roles, a reminder that the company’s labor pipeline is wide enough to make standardized training and development part of the business, not just a perk on a recruiting page. Amazon has framed Career Choice as a way to support careers at Amazon or elsewhere, and that flexibility gives Whole Foods workers a clear test for whether to use it for internal promotion or for a longer-term career pivot.
