Mammoth Lakes Pickleball Complex Opens for Spring Season Near Town Library
Mammoth Lakes opened 6 free pickleball courts on March 23, available daily from 8 a.m. to dusk at nearly 8,000 feet with panoramic Sierra Nevada views.

Six free courts where an outdoor ice rink once stood: Mammoth Lakes has been quietly building one of the Eastern Sierra's most compelling pickleball destinations, and the 2026 spring season is now underway.
The Mammoth Lakes Pickleball Complex opened March 23, with the town confirming access in its community e-news update days later. The facility sits at 1616 Old Mammoth Road, directly across the parking lot from the Mammoth Lakes Library, and runs on the simplest possible drop-in format: show up between 8:00 a.m. and dusk, any day of the week, and play for free. Courts are available first-come, first-served, with private rentals able to take precedence.
The surface itself is worth noting for visiting players. AllSport America Inc., Northern California's largest court builder, installed Cushion Extreme playing surfaces across all six regulation courts. The town selected light blue for the kitchen and dark blue for the service areas, with traditional green in the surrounding non-playing zones. Low-back nets between each court help contain stray balls on breezy afternoons, which matters more than it might sound: Mammoth Lakes sits at roughly 7,880 feet elevation, and wind off the Sierra can redirect a lob in a hurry.
That altitude is the single biggest variable players arriving from lower elevations tend to underestimate. At nearly 8,000 feet, the ball travels noticeably faster through thinner air, and cardiovascular fatigue builds quicker than expected, especially for players arriving from sea level for a ski-season wind-down. Hydrate well before stepping on court and plan shorter sessions on the first day out.
Footwear matters on the Cushion Extreme surface as well. Court shoes with lateral support and non-marking soles grip cushioned acrylic better than trail runners or casual sneakers, particularly during sharp directional changes that outdoor play demands.
The complex includes restrooms, picnic tables, parking, and complimentary Wi-Fi, making it viable for a full afternoon rather than a quick hit-and-go. The Sierra Nevada backdrop, visible from every court, has already earned the facility a devoted following among returning visitors who note that most indoor-heavy players simply are not prepared for the scenery.
The timing of the spring opening lines up with the broader Mammoth recreation calendar. The town held its Summer Recreation Expo on March 30 at the Community Recreation Center on Old Mammoth Road, where parks and recreation staff discussed summer camps, leagues, and programming across all facilities. Whether pickleball clinics or round-robins land on the warm-weather schedule will likely depend on how quickly early-season demand takes hold at those six courts near the library.
