Workers at BUNN's Stevenson Drive plant in Springfield, Illinois found out their employer had changed hands the same way you'd rather not learn something that big: at the end of a shift, with no warning. Ali Group, the Chicago-based foodservice equipment conglomerate, completed its acquisition of Bunn Commercial LP on March 12, 2026, ending five generations of Bunn family control over one of Springfield's oldest companies. Financial terms were not disclosed.

The deal folds BUNN into Ali Group's global portfolio and, in North America specifically, places it under the Welbilt brand umbrella. Ali Group Chairman and Chief Executive Officer Filippo Berti framed the acquisition in unmistakably strategic terms. "The acquisition of BUNN marks an important step in strengthening Ali Group's leadership in the global coffee and beverage equipment sector and advancing our long term growth strategy," Berti said in the company's press release. "BUNN brings a strong heritage, a culture of innovation and a highly complementary portfolio that expands our global capabilities."

For the roughly 850 workers at the Stevenson Drive plant, those words have not translated into anything concrete about their futures. Company leaders declined to share details about staffing or future operations, and Ali Group declined to answer inquiries about Springfield operations and its local workforce, referring questioners back to the press release instead. Attempts to reach BUNN directly were also unsuccessful. Local officials are now waiting for the next round of announcements.

Ryan Blackman, Ali Group's vice president of marketing and communications, offered the public-facing reassurance: "BUNN will work closely with Ali Group and Welbilt throughout the integration process and remains focused on advancing growth and delivering value for customers. In short, it remains business as usual at BUNN." A joint statement from Ali Group and Welbilt echoed that message for customers specifically, saying there would be "no changes to existing relationships between customers and the BUNN they know across support and engagement teams" and that "BUNN's strategic objectives are not pivoting."

What that means for the Stevenson Drive plant, BUNN's Springfield headquarters, and its manufacturing footprint remains an open question. The press release, as originally noted, stopped short of outlining what the move will mean on the ground in Springfield.

BUNN's roots in the city stretch back to 1840, when, according to SangamonLink, the company began as the grocery firm of McConnell Bunn & Co. According to Ali Group's release, BUNN began its beverage equipment business in 1957 and was incorporated in 1963. Today the company manufactures coffee and iced tea brewers, superautomatic espresso machines, grinding systems, beverage dispensers, water systems and related accessories, with operations extending to Canada, Mexico, Brazil, China and the United Kingdom.

Ali Group describes itself as the world's largest group in the foodservice equipment industry, with 80 manufacturing facilities across 16 countries. The company is headquartered in Chicago. Whether Springfield remains a meaningful node in that network is precisely the question that 850 workers are still waiting to have answered.
