Mary Beth Temple of MBT Creates brought something genuinely different to the MooglyCAL2026 with Block 6: a double-thick woven construction that stands apart from the five squares that preceded it. Tamara Kelly posted the free pattern on Moogly on March 19, and the Woven Checkerboard Square has already landed on Ravelry with 84,119 projects and 46,916 stashes recorded on the listing.

The block's defining trick is its double-thick build, which Temple achieves through a weaving technique, a first for this CAL series. Kelly, who has been documenting her own MooglyCAL2026 progress throughout the year, noted in her post: "The Woven Checkerboard Square is made with simple stitches - and big impact! Mary Beth has brought weaving to the CAL, and I'm not mad about it!"

Color planning is where this square gets interesting, and Kelly had a specific recommendation for anyone who likes to think before they stitch: "I jumped right in, but I do recommend that those who prefer to plan their color layout sit down with some graph paper. There are so many color possibilities here!" The post shows two very different approaches side by side. Temple's own sample uses just 2 colors of Berroco Vintage, showing how cleanly the checkerboard reads in a minimalist palette. Kelly's CAL square goes the opposite direction: 6 shades of WeCrochet Brava Worsted in Custard, Seashell, Fig, Denim, Espresso, and Cream. Materials for Kelly's sample were provided by Local Crafts.

Skill-level-wise, Kelly called it "easy enough for beginners, but the colors add interest and a challenge for more experienced stitchers," which tracks with how the CAL has been structured all year. The MooglyCAL2026 launched in January with the Archie Argyle Crochet Square and the Radiate Champion Block, followed in February by the Cozy Circles Crochet Square and the Endless Griddle Stitch Square, then the Blue Cascade Afghan Square in March before this release. The schedule runs through late November, with the next blocks due April 2, 16, and 30.

For anyone working through the tutorials alongside the pattern, Kelly linked out to guides on the Chainless Starting Double Crochet, Standing sc, and seamless join, all of which are relevant to the construction. The Moogly CAL Facebook group remains the hub for project sharing and troubleshooting, and the Woven Checkerboard Square is listed under MBT Creates on Ravelry for those tracking their project there.

The free pattern link is available through the Moogly post, and the post carries affiliate links per Kelly's standard disclosure.
