Lady Gaga's Touring Drummer Tosh Peterson Joins Alkaline Trio

Matt Skiba couldn't help himself. On March 19, the Alkaline Trio guitarist reshared an Instagram video of a recent Tosh Peterson interview and tipped the band's hand with a caption that left nothing ambiguous: "LOVE this guy. He's already the best drummer in the world in our book @alkaline_trio. We're HONORED to be playing with @tosh_thedrummer for these upcoming shows and we're hoping for a long time to come." Peterson confirmed it himself shortly after, posting: "OK, Matt Skiba spilled the beans. I'm the new drummer for Alkaline Trio!!"

Peterson, 24, is Los Angeles-based and spent the past several months on the road as the touring drummer for Lady Gaga during the MAYHEM Ball run. That's a big-tent pop production by any measure, but his resume runs well beyond arena pop. His touring and studio credits include Machine Gun Kelly, Bad Bunny, Filter, and Lil Nas X. According to his website, he started playing drums at age two and was already touring professionally by 16, spending most of his career working as a hired-gun drummer for hire across genres.

His adaptability isn't just a talking point. In 2023, Peterson appeared in a Drumeo video explaining how he learned 25 songs in fewer than two days when called to fill in for Fall Out Boy drummer Andrew Hurley. That kind of cold-start versatility is exactly what a band needs when they're slotting someone into a touring run on short notice.

Peterson slots in behind the kit following Atom Willard's departure. Willard announced he was leaving Alkaline Trio in a February 2 social media post, writing: "With everything going on, going wrong in the world right now, this may seem insignificant but it's not for me. I have parted ways with Alkaline Trio. Thanks to everyone who made my time there so awesome, very thankful for the experience." Initially, guitarist Skiba and bassist Dan Andriano had not commented publicly on Willard's exit or a replacement. Skiba's March 19 post ended that silence.

If Peterson's role becomes permanent, he would be Alkaline Trio's fifth full-time drummer since the band formed in Chicago in 1996.

The immediate priority is a fall co-headlining run with fellow Chicago punk act Rise Against, kicking off September 22 in Dallas at the South Side Ballroom. The tour hits Austin's Moody Amphitheater at Waterloo Park on September 23, Raleigh's Red Hat Amphitheater on September 27, and New York's The Rooftop at Pier 17 on September 30. October dates include Philadelphia's The Fillmore on the 4th, Red Rocks Amphitheatre in Morrison, Colorado on the 12th, and a closing date October 17 at the Pearl Concert Theater at Palms Casino Resort in Las Vegas.

That's a serious stretch of venues for a drummer stepping into a new band's catalog. Peterson has been building his public profile with drum tutorials on YouTube and social media that have pulled thousands of views, so the Alkaline Trio audience will have no shortage of footage to evaluate before those September dates arrive.
