Perth Jazz Drummer Julius Rogers Builds Global Career From Miami

Julius Rogers is an Australian-born drummer, producer, and composer whose artistry bridges contemporary jazz, world music, hip-hop, and classical influences. The Perth native has spent the past several years methodically building one of the more impressive young careers in Miami's jazz scene, and the trajectory tells a compelling story for any drummer watching from outside the American market.

From 2018 to 2021, Rogers was a member of the West Australian Youth Jazz Orchestra, an early foundation before he set his sights considerably further afield. In 2022, he released his debut album "Witching Hour," a concept project capturing the atmospheric aesthetics of Noir and Neo-Noir cinema through a diverse range of jazz idioms, drawing inspiration from UK jazz, 1970s fusion, neo-soul, jazz-funk, modal jazz, lounge music, and impressionism.

In April 2023, Rogers was accepted into the Frost School of Music to pursue a Master's in Jazz Performance, receiving a full scholarship, a Graduate Teaching Assistantship under the mentorship of Grammy-winning drummer Dafnis Prieto, and recognition as a Mancini Fellow at the prestigious Henry Mancini Institute. That is not a modest landing. Prieto is a Grammy-winning drummer and composer who blends his Cuban heritage with a forward-looking musical vision, and is a MacArthur "Genius" Fellowship recipient. Getting a teaching assistantship in his program from the other side of the world is the kind of credential that opens doors quickly.

Rogers was also invited to join the 2024 JAS Academy Afro-Caribbean Big Band session in Aspen, Colorado, led by renowned trumpeter Etienne Charles. Most recently, he became a member of the critically acclaimed Frost Jazz Orchestra from 2024 to 2025.

As a performer, Rogers has been gigging internationally since 2015, with performances across the USA, Australia, France, Hungary, Germany, Austria, and the Czech Republic. His collaborators include The Rodriguez Brothers, Dick Oatts, Linda May Han Oh, Fabian Almazan, Katie Noonan, Sean Jones, Jaleel Shaw, Marcus Strickland, John Daversa, and George Garzone.

His highly versatile style and distinctive sound have established him as one of the most in-demand drummers in Miami and beyond. For a drummer who grew up in Perth, that positioning inside the Miami jazz ecosystem, one of the deepest talent pools in the United States, represents exactly the kind of long-game career building that rarely gets enough attention.
