Suffocation Drummer Eric Morotti Quits, Citing Toxic and Abusive Bandmates
Morotti made the announcement on his birthday, calling Suffocation bandmates "toxic, abusive drug addicts." John Longstreth of Origin steps in for spring 2026 dates.

After nearly a decade behind the kit for one of death metal's most studied acts, Eric Morotti chose his birthday to end his tenure with Suffocation, posting a pair of Instagram statements that named his former bandmates directly and framed the exit as a decision to protect his own health and integrity.
"Today. On my. Birthday. I have chosen to step away from Suffocation to prolong my health, myself. My integrity," Morotti wrote. "I will not work with toxic. Abusive drug addicts. Let alone allow them to boss me around. I've been belittled and stepped all over for too long." In a separate post, he was equally unambiguous: "Thanks for the birthday wishes. My gift to myself is walking away from a toxic group, and knowing my worth."
Suffocation moved quickly on the practical side while saying nothing about Morotti's accusations. Hours before Morotti published his statements, the band had already announced John Longstreth of Origin as a "very special guest" drummer for their spring 2026 shows, including a support run with Cradle of Filth and appearances at Welcome to Rockville and Sonic Temple. The timing all but confirmed the departure had been in motion before it became public.
The Longstreth appointment is significant on its own terms. Origin's drummer is as technically formidable a figure as exists in extreme metal, known for hyper-precise blast work and an ability to hold down tempos that would buckle most players. Slotting him into Suffocation's catalog, which demands the same level of articulation and endurance, signals the band is not scaling back their live presentation while they sort out a permanent solution.
For Morotti, the exit removes him from a touring operation but leaves his schedule anything but empty. He is currently on the road with Sanguisugabogg and retains his seat in the death metal supergroup Ablation, keeping him active in the scene even without Suffocation on the itinerary.
What makes this departure cut deeper than a routine lineup shuffle is the specificity of what Morotti said publicly. Accusations of substance abuse and workplace belittlement, made under his real name, aimed at a named band, carry consequences that a vague "parting of ways" statement does not. His willingness to frame his exit in those terms reflects a broader shift in extreme metal, where musicians are increasingly treating working conditions as a subject worth naming out loud rather than smoothing over in a press release.
Suffocation has not addressed Morotti's claims directly. With Longstreth confirmed for the upcoming run and no permanent replacement announced, the band's next formal communication will tell fans whether this is being treated as a transitional moment or the beginning of something more structurally different.
