Del Rey Books announced "The Mighty Nein: Children of Empire," the first official sequel novel to Critical Role's Mighty Nein campaign, written by award-winning author Nibedita Sen and scheduled to arrive November 10.

The novel centers on Caleb Widogast and Beauregard Lionett, the so-called "Empire Kids" who grew up under the Dwendalian Empire's reach. According to the official Critical Role Books page, the story picks up in the campaign's aftermath: "With the Cloven Crystals hidden and Uk'otoa once again imprisoned, all that's left for the Mighty Nein is to settle back into their well-earned retirements. For some, this means peace and solitude; for others, a recommitment to unmitigated chaos. And for Caleb Widogast and Beauregard Lionett, it marks a return to the empire they once called home."

That homecoming does not stay peaceful for long. The Cerberus Assembly and its only living founder, "the calculating and secretive Ludinus Da'leth," emerge as the central threat. When an old friend offers Caleb a chance to investigate Ludinus, the temptation outweighs the risk of betraying those closest to him. Beau, meanwhile, finds domestic life a poor fit: per the official Critical Role Books page, "a good infiltration is the perfect distraction."

Part of what makes the Cerberus Assembly a compelling antagonist is the shape of the problem. As the official Critical Role Books page frames it: "It's not an evil that can be pummeled into submission-but that doesn't mean they can't try." The Del Rey press release, dated March 26, promised the novel would deliver "intrigue, political machinations, and the occasional fist fight."

Del Rey characterized the project as a "first-of-its-kind official sequel novel," and the book has been described as bridging the stories of Campaigns 2 and 3, making it the first piece of official Critical Role fiction to function as a direct narrative continuation connecting two full live-play campaigns. Critical Role expressed enthusiasm for the announcement alongside the press materials.

For a fandom that has spent years speculating about what Caleb and Beau did after the Campaign 2 epilogue, "Children of Empire" is the first official answer in print, and it comes carrying one of Wildemount's most dangerous names.
