New Jersey State Fair homebrew competition opens judge and steward signup

The 29th Annual New Jersey State Fair Homebrew Competition has moved past entry intake and is now looking for the people who will make judging day work. Judge and steward registration is open on the Brewing Competitions platform and will close Sunday, Aug. 2, 2026, at 4:08 p.m. EDT, while account registration, entry registration and entry drop-off are all closed.

That shift matters because the competition already has 244 entries in the system. With bottles no longer being accepted at drop-off locations, the field is set and the final job is staffing the tables, organizing flights and keeping scores moving cleanly through the room. For a homebrew competition, that volunteer layer is what turns a crowded entry list into usable feedback for brewers.

The New Jersey State Fair Homebrew Competition has been around long enough to have its own track record. SCUBA Homebrew Club maintains results pages for the event, including the 2024 NJ State Fair Homebrew Competition, the 27th annual edition, and the club also tracks New Jersey homebrewer standings. That kind of continuity is one reason judge and steward registration matters: it keeps the annual event tied into a broader local awards circuit rather than functioning as a one-off fair attraction.

The competition’s scale gives the volunteer pool real work to do. A field of 244 entries can cover everything from everyday pale ales and lagers to sours, fruit beers and specialty beers, which means judges need enough trained hands to move beers across multiple tables and style categories without bottlenecks. Stewards are part of that same system, helping manage bottles, sheets and the flow of entries so judges can focus on scoring.

There is also a long-running community history behind the fair. A 20th Annual NJ State Fair Homebrew Competition was advertised in July 2016 at the New Jersey State Fairgrounds, 37 Plains Rd. in Augusta, tying the contest to Sussex County and the larger Sussex County Farm and Horse Show site. A post associated with the competition says the fair has no entry fees, no limit on the number of entries, pays cash if you place and offers feedback from BJCP-qualified judges.

That combination of open access, judged feedback and prize support is what keeps the event drawing brewers back year after year.
