AYCC Polar Plunge Raises Funds to Support Youth Meal Programs in Waterville
AYCC's 33rd Annual Polar Plunge, "Braving the Ice for Meals," hits Oakland Boat Launch on March 21 to fund youth nutrition programs fighting rising food costs.

The Alfond Youth & Community Center is sending a clear message this March: brave the cold, feed a kid. The organization's 33rd Annual Polar Plunge, themed "Braving the Ice for Meals," brings plungers to the Oakland Boat Launch on Old Belgrade Ave. in Oakland, Maine on Saturday, March 21, with proceeds going directly toward meal programs for children and teens enrolled in AYCC youth programs.
The fundraiser arrives at a moment when food costs are climbing. Funds raised will help offset rising food costs and sustain youth nutrition initiatives that support learning, growth, and overall well-being, according to reporting from the Bangor Daily News. The goal is straightforward: ensure that kids in AYCC programs have consistent access to healthy meals and snacks regardless of what's happening in the broader economy.
This year's event leans into a Winter Beach Party theme, captured in AYCC's tagline "Beach Vibes. Cold Dives. Our Community Thrives." Costumes are encouraged alongside the camaraderie and cold water. Participants can plunge solo, register as a team, cheer from the shore, or simply donate in support. Every form of participation, AYCC notes, makes a real impact on food access for Waterville-area youth.
Waterville Creates, which is also listing the event under the name "Polar Plunge – Scare Out Hunger," describes the plunge as a chance to dive into icy waters and help combat food insecurity in the community. The Mid-Maine Chamber of Commerce has promoted the event on its calendar as well, reflecting the cross-organizational support the fundraiser draws each year.

AYCC, a mission-driven nonprofit based at 126 North Street in Waterville, defines its work as inspiring and enabling young people and their families to realize their full potential as healthy, productive, responsible, and caring citizens. The Polar Plunge is one of its signature public fundraising efforts, and at 33 years running, it has become a fixture of the late-winter community calendar.
