Detroit's JW Marriott Spa to Feature Cold Plunge, Sauna in 10,500-Square-Foot Facility

The 10,500-square-foot spa going into the JW Marriott Detroit Water Square reads like a spec sheet for contrast therapy done right: nine treatment rooms, a sauna, a cold plunge, and a whirlpool, all exclusive to hotel guests when the 601-room property opens in 2027.

The hotel is under construction adjacent to Huntington Place, Detroit's primary convention venue, a pairing that puts on-property cold plunge access within reach of the conference attendees and corporate travel groups who fill the city's premium hotel inventory. That demographic hasn't had a setup like this at scale in downtown Detroit before.

The cold plunge's position on the amenity list reflects a broader shift in how urban hospitality projects are being designed. Contrast therapy, the deliberate cycling between sauna heat and cold water immersion, spent years as a specialty offering at destination wellness resorts. Its incorporation into a convention-oriented urban hotel is a meaningful signal: operators now treat a sauna-and-plunge circuit as a baseline differentiator, not a niche feature reserved for a specific guest type.

Visit Detroit president and CEO Claude Molinari said the hotel was "always the missing piece" for the city's downtown offering and would "elevate the economic impact of tourism to downtown Detroit for years to come." The full property also includes meeting space and riverfront views overlooking the Detroit Riverfront, positioning it to capture both leisure travelers and the corporate groups that Huntington Place reliably draws.

For the cold therapy industry, hotel spa procurement is becoming a serious commercial channel. Properties at this scale are specifying plunge tubs, water chilling systems, and thermal contrast equipment as standard line items. The JW Marriott Water Square is a notable example of that demand playing out at the convention-hotel tier.

Construction continues in Detroit, with the hotel on track for a 2027 opening.
