Wrightsville Beach Plunge Returns to Support Local Youth Programs
The 11th annual Wrightsville Beach Plunge took place on January 1, 2026, bringing community members together for a New Year’s Day dip in the Atlantic and raising funds for youth services. The event preserved family-friendly traditions, costumes, music, and a post-plunge afterparty, while continuing to benefit Communities In Schools of Cape Fear.

On January 1, 2026, the 11th annual Wrightsville Plunge drew community members to Wrightsville Beach for a pair of New Year’s Day plunges that combined celebration with fundraising. Activities began at 11 a.m., and plunges took place at noon and 12:30 p.m., with a ticketed afterparty held at South End Surf Shop. Organizers ran shuttle service from Wrightsville Beach Park beginning at 10 a.m. to move participants and spectators to the South End gathering area.
The event continued a local tradition that attracts a mix of first-time plungers and long-time participants who often dress in costume for the splash. In recent years the plunge has drawn more than 1,200 participants, and registrants received a choice of a t-shirt or beanie as part of their entry. Family-friendly offerings around the plunge included music, games, a costume contest, and photo opportunities that kept the atmosphere festive beyond the brief cold-water dip.
All proceeds from registration and related activities supported Communities In Schools of Cape Fear. That nonprofit provides academic assistance, after-school programming, mentoring, and mental-health support across county public schools, and the plunge serves as a significant local fundraising and visibility opportunity for those services. Local parents, coaches, and teachers cited the event as a practical way to contribute directly to programs that affect students in the region.

For participants and spectators, the logistics mattered: organizers encouraged early arrival to avoid congestion and took steps to transport attendees via shuttles from the park. Registration included event apparel and access to the activities that framed the plunges, while the afterparty offered a ticketed space for socializing and additional fundraising after the waves cooled.
As the community reflects on another winter plunge, the event underscored the dual role smaller-scale athletic and social traditions play in local philanthropy and community cohesion. Check the plunge’s event website for future dates, ticketing details, volunteer opportunities, and ways to support Communities In Schools of Cape Fear year-round.
