Lord of the Rings Commander Decks Restock at Amazon With Select Discounts

All four Commander preconstructed decks from Magic: The Gathering's 2023 Lord of the Rings Universes Beyond set resurfaced on Amazon last week, with two of the four carrying discounts and one sitting at a notably steeper price point than the rest.

Whether the availability reflects clearing old stock or a fresh printing run remains an open question. No confirmation from Wizards of the Coast accompanied the listings, and the price spread between decks makes the picture murkier: Hosts of Mordor, the Sauron-helmed deck, was priced at just shy of $90, considerably higher than its three counterparts.

The two discounted options are worth the closer look. Elven Council, which runs Galadriel, Legolas, and Arwen as its featured commanders, came in at $45.87. The deck includes a reprint of Heroic Intervention, a staple that Commander players have been happy to see in precon products, and Raise the Palisade still carries secondary market value on its own. Food and Fellowship, built around Frodo and Sam with a life-gain engine driven by sacrificing food tokens, was priced at $48.59.

Riders of Rohan sat at $49.92 and carried no discount. It is an aggressive, combat-heavy build and has been cited as one of the stronger ready-to-play options currently on the market. The slightly higher price without a markdown makes it the toughest sell of the three reasonably priced options, though the deck's reputation for showing up at tables and immediately doing something is well established.

Every deck in the restock includes a Collector Booster Sample Pack containing a couple of cards that may include foils and borderless treatments, which adds at least a small collecting element to what are otherwise straightforward precon purchases.

The timing places these listings in the middle of a busy Universes Beyond release calendar. A Spider-Man set is next on Wizards' schedule, meaning the Lord of the Rings precons are competing for shelf attention with incoming product. That context makes the discount on Elven Council, in particular, a reasonable entry point for anyone who has been eyeing the Middle-earth set since its 2023 debut and held off on pulling the trigger.
