Secrets of Strixhaven delivered the biggest prerelease turnout Wizards of the Coast has ever seen, a milestone that immediately tells store owners and Commander players to expect a hotter release than usual. Wizards said the set posted Magic’s most widely attended prerelease in company history, and it used War of the Spark, released on May 3, 2019, as the benchmark for just how large the response was.

The timing matters. Secrets of Strixhaven prerelease events ran April 17-23, 2026, right in the middle of a launch window built around sealed play and early access to new cards and products. Wizards Play Network materials framed the prerelease as a casual, store-centered event where players build Sealed decks, and Secrets of Strixhaven split its prerelease into five themed packs tied to Strixhaven’s five colleges. That kind of structure is tailor-made for local game stores, where players show up for the event itself and often leave wanting more product the same day.

The set also had an advantage that standard set releases do not always enjoy: a strong in-world Magic identity. Secrets of Strixhaven returns to Strixhaven University on the plane of Arcavios, the same setting that first arrived in Strixhaven: School of Mages on April 23, 2021. Wizards’ own guide describes Strixhaven as a magical school founded about 700 years ago by five spellcasting dragons, and that college-based fantasy hook gives the set a recognizable identity that many tabletop players can grab onto quickly.

That matters for Commander because a prerelease spike usually does not stop at sealed play. A set that brings out this many players on the opening weekend often creates faster movement on booster packs, singles, and any build-around cards that fit casual tables. More than 90 percent of Wizards Play Network local game stores said the Secrets of Strixhaven prerelease went rather well for them, a retail read that lines up with the turnout record and suggests strong demand on the floor, not just online chatter.

Wizards also marked the result at MagicCon: Las Vegas, which runs May 1-3, 2026, making the prerelease record part of a larger push around the set’s launch. For players deciding when to buy, attend, or wait for restocks, the message is straightforward: Secrets of Strixhaven arrived with real momentum, and that kind of start usually shows up first in crowded tables and empty shelves.
