WPN Stores to Host Loki-Themed Commander Events for Marvel Super Heroes Release
WPN stores will run Magic Presents: God of Mischief this summer, an asymmetrical Commander variant where one Loki player with 60 life faces three heroes sharing a single 60-life pool.

Three heroes. One villain. One shared life total that makes every point of damage count for the whole table.
Magic Presents: God of Mischief is a Loki-themed asymmetrical Commander variant coming to Wizards Play Network (WPN) stores this summer alongside the Magic: The Gathering | Marvel Super Heroes release. The format breaks from the standard Commander pod in one load-bearing rule: the three heroes don't each manage their own life total. They pool it.
WPN lays out the mechanics directly: "The player acting as Loki starts the game with a play aid that lists a selection of 'Loki's Tricks.' The Loki player goes first and starts with 60 life. On each of their turns, the Loki player must select a new Trick from the options available on the play aid. The other three players, the heroes, take their turns simultaneously and have a shared life total of 60."
That shared 60 is the format's defining pressure point. In a standard Commander game, each player cushions themselves behind a separate life total. Here, a damage-dealing Trick that touches all three heroes doesn't divide the pain across three separate pools; it drains the one pool they all defend together. Any effect that reaches the whole table hits harder in this format than it would in a typical pod, and the heroes can't quietly let someone else absorb a hit.
The rotation requirement on Loki's Tricks matters just as much. The Loki player must select a new Trick every turn, which prevents camping the most powerful option indefinitely and keeps the heroes from planning around a static engine. The complete list of available Tricks hasn't been released in publicly available materials, but WPN will distribute the physical play aid to participating stores ahead of the event window. If you're a store owner, confirming receipt of that kit is your first logistical step. If you're a player, asking your LGS whether their materials have arrived is the fastest way to find out whether the event is on their calendar.
The release timeline gives you a clear window to prepare. Marvel Super Heroes prereleases run June 19-25, with the worldwide set release on June 26. Commander Party events follow in two waves: July 3-9 and July 31 through August 6. Magic Presents: God of Mischief is designed to run through this release season, so stores can program it from prerelease week onward. Not every WPN location will offer it; the format is an available option for participating stores, not a mandatory event.
The deckbuilding calculus differs sharply depending on which seat you fill. As Loki, going first with 60 life and a rotation of selectable Tricks rewards decks that generate early pressure and can sustain it into the mid-game, when all three heroes should have established boards and communication rhythms. Loki's strongest position is denying the heroes time to synchronize; proactive, pressure-oriented builds will have higher ceilings than slow control shells that hand the heroes the development turns they need. Expect the heroes to use their simultaneous turn structure to stack plans and lines in parallel once they find their footing.
On the hero side, the shared life pool makes the table's most critical resource communal. Bring a deck that can function independently without expecting your pod partners to compensate for a slow start. Lifegain engines or defensive stabilizers take pressure off the shared pool while the other two heroes build their boards, and at least one player in the trio should be running meaningful interaction to keep Loki's Tricks from snowballing unchecked. Passive, engine-dependent decks that need several turns to become functional hand Loki exactly the window the format is designed to give.
Every player at the table, including Loki, receives a participation promo card. WPN has not yet announced the specific card's identity, art, or rarity; store owners and players should expect those details to accompany the play kits when materials are distributed.
Magic Presents: God of Mischief runs alongside a separate Marvel Super Heroes WPN event: Marvel Super Heroes: The Final Battle, a Standard format offering that rewards an exclusive alternate-cover Marvel comic book variant. The comic title hasn't been confirmed yet, but the precedent is instructive: the earlier Spider-Man: The Final Battle event, run alongside Magic: The Gathering | Marvel's Spider-Man, awarded an alternate-cover edition of The Amazing Spider-Man #1. The Marvel Super Heroes season appears to be following the same model.
To confirm whether your store is running God of Mischief events, check the WPN event listings once Marvel Super Heroes season materials go live, or contact your LGS directly before prerelease weekend opens on June 19.
